Guinness toasts MX-5
First Published: Monday, July 17, 2000

Mazda's MX-5 has been recognised by Guiness World Records as the world's
top-selling lightweight open two-seater sports car. The Guinness
certification was obtained after Mazda applied to Guinness World Records
last November when the cumulative production of 500,000 MX-5s was reached.

"The certification means that the MX-5 required only 10 years after the
start of production to prove itself as the world's most successful sports
car," says Mark Fields, President of Mazda.

According to the Guinness World Record Limited it will now consider this
record for entry into the world's biggest selling copyright book, Guinness
World Records itself. MX-5 production started in April 1989 and cumulative
production reached 565,779 units at the end of June 2000, and is still
growing. The car made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February, 1989
and has since gained an international army of fans. There are now MX-5
Clubs around the world including Australia, the US, Canada and Japan which
are run entirely by MX-5 enthusiasts.

The Guinness Book of Records published by Guinness World Records Limited
records feats accepted as the greatest in the world in various fields,
including sports, culture and industry. Guinness published its first edition
in 1955.
