a word of warning

Post by Debra » Wed Jun 21, 2000 4:54 pm

Last night I had the joy of my stereo being stolen from my car. It was parked on Princess st under a light with the top class mongose alarm going but still that didn't stop them. The way the got in was through the passenger window. They managed to wind it down (no electric windows in my '90) and reach in and grab it. So if anyone knows how to they got my window down I would appreciate knowing so I can see if I can stop it happening when I get my replacement.

Cheers

Debra

Very sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, no stereo is safe these days -
especially in a convertible.
A number of companies make hideaway stereos now (stealth face plates -
including JVC, Kenwood and now Sony) which I recommend, or at lease use a
detachable face plate one and remove the plate. (take it with you ALWAYS, or
at minimum, leave it in the boot) If they can't see it, they probably won't
steal it. Ask your insurance company if you can upgrade to one of these.
I've had 3 stolen from previous cars before I learnt :)

A couple of possibilities as to how they got in
1. They used something to force the side glass back from the top and had a
small arm, or bar to reach and push the winder down
2. Sometimes slightly loose windows can be slowly pushed downwards bit by
bit from the outside
3. They loosened the rear window zip from the outside (pretty easy) and
reached in from the back
4. Maybe they actually got in through the door by sliding in something and
pulling up the lock - maybe the window was open later?
5. you left a door unlocked? Probably not likely as I assume your alarm has
central locking?

Another thing I recommend - make sure when your window is fully wound up,
the winder handle is pointing straight down or a little bit forward of that.
(you can take it off to adjust it) This makes it harder to push something
down onto the handle to open the window.

A lot of US owners suggest just leaving the doors unlocked, so crims don't
slash the top to get in. I don't think it has come to that yet, but I would
suggest leaving nothing in the glovebox and leaving that open to show them.
And don't have an aftermarket stereo in view.

The good thing about MX5s is that they don't get stolen that often
statistically. The sad thing is that they often have their tops slashed
just for fun, or to steal things out of. Alarms offer a little bit more
protection, but not much more.

Interested to hear of the breakins-in my locked garage was my locked mx5 and
yes they broke into the garage and tore the soft top to try and get the
radio-they failed but the insurance claim became the hassle. AMI Canterbury
approved the installation of a s/top thru the local agent- then the assessor
found an alternative installer charging 60% of the agents price but using a
californian type- I disagreed as I wanted the original mazda s/top, it then
transpired that Mazda couldn't supply the original but the californian
style- all this toing and froing even before the job started took 4
days-finally got a good job. Didn't realize the local agent was so expensive.

Thanks for the advise. Probably pushed window down I think as the door was still locked and I don't think they would bother locking it and holding the handle while closing it. I guess you cant be safe anywhere.
