I was planning on painting my vent rings. Why was yours unsuccesful? do you think I should still proceed or just not bother?

Paint doesnt like silicon, it wont adhere to the plastic if you or a
previous owner ever put silicon on the plastic.
Silicon can be found in many interior cleaner/restorers like armour-all, or
whatsit2000 (flouro green bottle).
There is a chemical that can clean it off, so the paint will stick, but its
not something common like Meths or Kerosene.
Try painting one... If the paint doesnt "fish-eye" (builds up little
bubbles that look like fish's eyes), let it dry, and see if its stuck. If
so, well done. Keep going.
If it does fish-eye, or dries smooth, but doesnt stick... clean it off with
turps, put it back together and forget about it...

painitng vent rings
I haven't attempted to paint my vent rings (they're already black ) but
have painted some plastic parts in my OTM.
I found that giving them a light sand before painting really helped.
