Bad Water Leak

Post by Alan Gerrard » Thu Dec 27, 2001 3:17 pm

Hello

I own a 1990 MX5 Roadster and just last night my car over heated and when I
checked the water in the radiator there was none.

I found a leak at the rear of the engine up the top just bellow the connection
for your leads.
Water was squirting out of a small thing with a rubber cap or something on the
end of it that sticks out horizontally towards the right of the motor.

Does anyone know what has happened or know how to fix this problem.

I hope this message has made sense.

Please email me back at
alang@ihug.co.nz or
gerky83@hotmail.com

thanks

Bad Water Leak

Sounds like its one of the heater hoses?

There are two heater water hoses about an inch round that go through the
fire-wall in front of the passenger (near wiper washer bottle)...

One joins onto a metal pipe that runs the length of the engine, under the
exhaust manifold, and the other joins onto the back of the head, under the
coil pack...

If one water hose has just blown, chances are the others are equally old. I
replaced all my water hoses when I re-built my engine...

The one on the back of the head is the hardest to get to!

Where the two heater hoses go through the fire-wall, they are hose-clamped
onto copper pipes that go through to the heater in the passenger
compartment... These pipes are very thin, and are VERY easy to crush. If you
already have replacement hoses, cut them off with a knife... trying to twist
them off like most other water pipes will just damage the copper pipes...

Good Luck,

Fletch.
