flat tyre --> shredded tyre

Post by simple » Sun Dec 02, 2001 9:25 pm

I just 'rescued' a lady in a black MX5.

Saw her going onto the motorway (heading north from Northcote
Rd) with what looked like a flat rear left tyre. I followed her for a
kilometre or so trying to decide if it really was flat & wondering if
maybe she was drunk too - she was all over the place (at 105kph
in the wet). By this stage the tyre was shedding lumps of rubber &
smelling bad. I flashed headlights & eventually she pulled over &
stopped on the Constellation Drive offramp.

The tyre was destroyed (I took a photo, of course :-) - chunks of
rubber still clung to the rim but the tread was completely detached
from the sidewalls and tangled around the suspension. I didn't
have a close look at the rim, but it seemed to be still OK.
Certainly didn't go as far as making sparks as she drove - do alloy
rims make the pretty sparks you see on USA reality-TV cop
programs?

I put the spare tyre on - it was dead flat, but got her as far as the
nearest petrol station to pump it up. The tyre was pretty warm
though. All of you people check your spare tyre every few months,
don't you? Mine seems to lose about 5psi per month.

Apparently the car had been a bit out of control for a few days -
presumably she's been running on flat for a little while.

I wasn't driving my car, so didn't have an MX5 club flier to give her,
but I have her address so I can post one. She's had the car for 6
years & her husband wants her to sell it, but she knows better :-)

Karl.
