cheap mx5's, brake pads, and flywheels

Post by Rowan Hick » Fri Nov 30, 2001 9:29 am

Hi All,

Well been digging through all sorts of websites gleaning all sorts of
good info an MX5's. Thanks to those that pointed me in that direction.
Now another question.. how cheaply can I get a 5 ? For track work I
don't mind one with a dodgy interior/exterior.. infact I would prefer it
as I would be less worried about getting it damaged.. and therefore be
concentrating more on driving harder. I've heard that the cheapest of
the cheap can be had for 6k.. basically all I want is one with a good
engine/box. Any pitfalls here ?

Brake Pads, stay away from Metal Kings, also watch out on those Carbon
Metallic pads, I had a set in my Z (Axxis Metal Matrix) and they really
do take an initial warm up.. which can catch you out on the first cold
stop. I've now got Pagid RS4-2's with slotted rotors which are making a
mess of my alloys :( - they stop good hot or cold, bloody impressive
when hot, but are rotoreaters. Got a set of Mintex 1144's to go in
tomorrow which are by all accounts what to use. Report after the weekend
on those.

Flywheels... if you get a unkown brand lightened flywheel put a scatter
shield in (big thick curved steel plate around the bellhousing inside
the trans tunnel), as it will stop exploding bits of flywheel. If you
race it's a good idea anyway.
