What is the standard factory flywheel weight for a 1.6 and what is a good
weight for an aftermarket lightened version?
I've been offered an alleged Mazdaspeed version which has holes machined
around the circumference just inboard from the teeth. They are about 20mm
dia and in groups of 1's and 3's, positioned to miss the dowel pins. It's
not alloy.
Could this be the real deal or a fake?

Dave

PS, Ray, you did give me flywheel info some months ago, but I've lost it.

Hi Dave
stock weight is 18lb-19lb i think for the 1.6, 1.8 is a couple of lbs heavier, my
one is steel and weighs 12lb, a rule of thumb is you need 30% off to notice any difference,
if you go very light (under 10lb) it will play havoc with your idle cos there's no
mass for momentum, the last genuine Mazdaspeed lightened flywheel i saw didn't have
any holes in it, made of steel and weighed 11.2lbs and was over $1000, now i'm not
saying the one you looked at is not a Mazdaspeed one its possible someone has drilled
a stock cast iron one, or they could have made a genuine one even lighter, i'm only
guessing going by the way they have arranged the holes to avoid stress, if it is
cast iron avoid it like the plague, dont really know how to tell if its a fake, tapping
it with a hammer alongside a stock one will probably tell you, it will sound different,
all lightened flywheels are made of steel or forged ali, i'll repeat this again,
i've seen what happens when a lightened cast iron one explodes its capable of taking
both your feet off when it comes through the car.
Have you done your clutch yet Dave or are you still nursing it along?
Ray :-)

thanks Ray,
Clutch still has a bit of life in it yet, won't take many more starts though.
I think I will pass on that flywheel, I don't fancy chunks of steel coming
at me. Thanks for the advice.

RE: flywheelsIf you want a lightened fly wheel get one made by someone like
Precision Engineering.
Better than lightening a factory one, or paying $1k for a Trust or Mazdaspeed
etc item.
