floppy springs...

Post by Joanne Hall » Thu Nov 22, 2001 3:02 pm

Hi all, need some advice pls. Just been to see those lovely people at VTNZ who have
informed me that my suspension hasn't passed the WOF because the springs are unsecure.
So I'm guessing they're worn out and need replacing - can anyone tell me what's
the best brands/types and where to get a good deal in Auckland?

NB have lowered suspn - 310mm fronts, 330mm rears, 15 inch mags 195's front and 205's
on the rear.

Thks in advance
Joanne

Joanne,

I assume the car is how you purchased it, you didnt have it lowered
yourself?

The springs on your car are too short (not worn out)... when the car
is lifted off the ground, the shock absorbers (which normally hold the
springs top and bottom) extend more than the springs, and the springs
are free to flop about...

Whilst this will not be a problem in normal driving, it is considered
unsafe by the authorities.

I would suggest that the car has always been like this (since it was
lowered... here or Japan?), and if it got warrants in the past, it was
because the WOF agent wasnt doing their job properly...

If you got it lowered yourself, you need to talk to the people who did
the job...

If you didnt have the car lowered yourself... I'd go back to the
dealer (assuming its not a private sale) and see if they will fix it,
as they sold you something that isnt road-worthy and irrespective of
what-ever warranty you did or didnt get, probably doesnt meet the
sale-of goods act requirements to be "of merchantable quality" or "fit
for the intended purpose" (the intended purpose being to drive it on
the road subject to all laws applicable).

I'm not a lawyer... so this doesnt constitute proper legal advise, but
thats my understanding of the WOF regs, the sale of goods act, etc.

Also, despite it not being up to spec as far as the regulations are
concerned, dont panic and think all of a sudden your car is unsafe to
drive... its no less safe than it was yesterday before you knew this
stuff... I cant see it actually being a problem unless you get
air-born over bumps...

Good luck,

Fletch.

Matt,

If yours is an early car with LSD it will be viscous. I believe that the
viscous unit is sealed and not servicable. Be interested to know what your
mecahnic is going to do for the money. I'd ask him for some indication of
what the parts cost is.

Hi Matt,

So he's going to replace the diff? He will be using a second hand one, so
you will need to ask if it is OK too. Lous message gave an indicative price,
about $450 from a parts supplier. Maybe you can source and supply him with
the diff and just pay for his labour?
