Query re. removing sellotape residue off back window

Post by Hannah Hawthorn » Wed Nov 21, 2001 9:25 am

Hi there, I need information on how to remove sellotape residue of back
plastic window of my MX5. Left by over-enthusiastic seller some months ago
when she stuck her for sale sign there. Must have been heavy duty stuff
because impossible to shift with soap and water. What solvent would be safe
to use?
Cheers

I've always found kerosine more effective than meths for sellotape type
glues. Can't absolutely guarantee that it won't affect the window, so try a
tiny amount on a corner first, but it's basically an oily solvent so I would
thimk it should be OK. Then meths or soapy water or window polish or
whatever to remove the slightly oily film if any.

Let us know how it (or any better solvent you find) works?

I've always found ordinary turps usually works and is safe. Meths would probably be OK too but test first.

I've been in office equipment and electronic repair for longer than I
care to remember...

Part of any repair job includes cleaning the item before returning to
the customer...

I've tried removing sticky residue from self-adhesive tapes and
stickers for many years with all the traditional solvents mentioned
but other posters... they all seem to work a little bit, removing
some of the residue, but not all...

A few years ago I discovered a new(ish) type of solvent that far
exceeds meths/turps/kero for removing sticker or tape residue...

It comes under a variety of names, common ones being "Disolvit" and
"Goo-Gone".
They are clearly labelled on the package as citrus based, and their
odour is clearly lemon or orange based (backing up the citrus claim).
I've seen them in supermarkets, hardware stores, gas stations and
places like K-mart, so they aren't that hard to find.

These citrus cleaners are THE thing for sticky messes. They also seem
to have no effect on any type of plastic.

I have also had reasonably good success with them on ball-point pen
ink. They also claim to be good for chewing gum, but I haven't had
occasion to test this claim.

Good luck,

Fletch.

I have a bottle of 'disolvit' somewhere - I'd forgotten all about it. It is
great stuff (and smells really nice) ;) I've seen it used for chewing gum
in hair... (don't ask) and it worked.

Hannah,
Meths is fine to use. Put some on with a rag to initially soak the sellotape
remains than after a few moments put some more on a rag and wipe it off.

Whilst I won't vouch for it on the plastic window try it first as it might dissolve the plastic- one of the best (most powerfull ) solvents you can find in most households is your wife or girl friends nail polish remover - it was the only thing I found that could remove the sticky mess left after taking tinting film off the window of my van some years ago (I had tried spaying thinners, turps, meths, kero and petrol - none had any significant effect) - I bought a large cheap bottle from Deka (wives only usually have small expensive botles and get a tad annoyed if you keep "borrowing it" for the workshop)

Sam - the solvent you are referring to is acetone and its is "death to most
plastics" - makes them go cloudy and sometimes sticky. I would be very
surprised if it didn't wreck the MX5 rear window.

Nail polish remover is acetone. I wouldn't put that on the rear window. Its
OK on glass, but on the rear window it's liable to make the plastic cloudy.

Take a real big sniff of the remover , and if your still able to stand
up put it back in the wifes's "make me lovely stuff" drawer cause it's
not worth the trouble on plastic. One thing you may find works is
placing some duct tape , gaffer tape , or whatever, over the sticky
patch and lifting. It just might take of the previous residue.

I've tried this before but not on a soft top rear window mind. Just a
thought , by the time you've tried all the suggested methods , it may
almost have been cheaper to buy a new back window.

cheers , and good luck

p.s - if you pass out from the big whiff of the chemicals , try not to
dent your car.

do not use acetone based solvents...potentially will/could ruin your back
window if its not glass.

When I was a lad (about 60 yrs ago) we used to make our own model aeroplane cement that way!

One thing that hasn't yet been mentioned is eucalyptus oil - isn't
destructive like acetone and smells a hell of a lot better!
