You shouldn't need any modifications to the arches to fit 16 inch wheels. I've got 17's with 205/40 rubber bands, and with a lowered suspension and stiffer sway bars they never came anywhere near the guards...until recently when I noticed that the rims have a 35mm offset, so I got some 10mm spacers to make them closer to the standard offset and this has caused some minor scrubbing on hard cornering. Which leads me on to another question - Exactly how important is the offset of a wheel? I keep seeing articles in the miata mag poo pooing those who deviate from the standard offset, yet recently I've looked through a japanese roadster mag and most of the cars had offsets other than standard (and many of these cars were owned by well known tuning shops). So who is wrong?, or does it depend on the application.
