Head lights

Post by Phil Dyer » Mon Sep 03, 2001 7:52 pm

Read the article about changing the blinkers to sidelights. Also when looking
for my MX5 I noticed one had lights just above the front tow points. They
weren't off-the-shelf driving lights, but housed in a smallish clear dome. I
don't know if they were halogen or not, and cant remember in which yard I saw
the car. Has anyone tried replacing the existing head light with a slim
oblong one and adjusting the headlight flap so it doesn't come up so far? Has
anyone added alternative lights - if so where did you fit them? I hesitate
filling up too much of the front vent with hardware.

Head lights

Those bulbous lights are factory for some models. Don't know if they were
ever an option in NZ but definately a number of Eunoses had them. You can
probably find a pic of one on one of the members cars on an events page.

You can buy low profile projector type lights from brainstorm
http://www.miata.org/ProductImages/527.jpg and a couple of other companies &
enthusiasts have made their own low pro lights including monster motorsports
http://www.autofotos.com/mega_miata.htm . Anyone in NZ got lo pros?

You can also buy aftermarket front bumpers that have holes for driving
lights from a few places (such as the mega miata pic above). What about
something like this... http://www.eunos.com/keith/BAL.html ?

Phil,
The lights you mention in the nose sound like the standard OEM fitted to
various Jap imported cars. They were available in the US from Mazda dealers.
Earlier MX5 magazines show them advertised. Most MX5s come with the wiring
already there for them as well as the wiring to the switch ( a blank if the
lights are absent ) below and to the right of the steering wheel.
I found on my MX5 that some previous owner in Japan has replaced the side
markers in each corner with lighted ones ( has a 5 watt bulb). He has fitted
Cebie headlights that have a smaller bulb below the headlight bulb and has
taken a connection from the existing parking lights at the front and run it up
to this bulb and down to the side marker. So when the parking lights are on
these other ones are also lighted. If the headlights are raised on the
dedicated button in the centre of the dash while the parks are on then these
smaller bulbs are also brightly lit.
