how fast ?

Post by Matt Gunn » Tue Feb 27, 2001 7:00 am

We had some 1/4 mile sprints at a clubday over the last weekend and I'm
wondering what sort of times anyone else may have recorded over the 1/4.

Our times will not be comparable as we had an uphill run with a twist.
The best time was around 17.6sec , top ET 116.4 ish. As you can see not
blistering , but like I say UP-HILL. Give us a flat strip and we'll see. I
think were working on it.

Hope to see some reasonable times.

Cheers

Matt

how fast ?

I went to the Performance car drags one night for a few runs. I was
interested to get a 1/4 mile time out of my circuit racer. Best time was
16.6 @ 83mph (133 kph). I had 4 runs, all were within 0.4 secs of each
other. Best launch technique was holding revs at 4000 and side stepping the
clutch. This gave just enough wheelspin to avoid bogging. I preferred side
stepping to get the wheels spinning rather than the clutch slipping. My car
is a standard NZ car (no air, PS or electric windows) with cold air box,
free exhaust and a totally stripped interior, so it's a bit lighter. Maybe
the club should hire Champion dragway for a day?

RE: how fast ?In regards to performance of the MX5's.
I just bought a 1990 MX5 and although its handling is superb its performance
is not that crash hot (I just moved from a 1987 Nissan Skyline Turbo). I was
wondering if anyone out there has made any modifications to their MX5's
(exhaust , air filter etc...) and has any advice.
Thanks,
Jim

how fast ?

Tried 3 runs the other week & have just found the results I scribbled down -
best time 15.95 @ 149.2kph (400m)
I'm sure I could do better though. Conditions were cool evening, straight
road (obviously a private backroad...), launched from a tiny bit of gravel
at the side of the road so a small amount of wheel slip to begin. Measured
with Gary Morrison's g-tech meter which I think is pretty accurate if set up
well enough. Also a small amount of limiter bounce going from 2nd to 3rd.
Car is 94 1.8 with all elecs - aircon etc. Some weight removed here and
there, but more added (stereo, alarm etc). Stock intake, manifold, air
filter, cat etc. Timing set at around 16*btdc and 96 octane fuel.

Matt - how were you doing your speed measurements? I have the loan of an old
police style radar gun - might have to bring that to the next track/driver
training day. I'm sure it could be lent out if requested...

Hi zorruno

We had a laser set up owned by a motorcycle club.

The first laser was triggered at the start line . There were 3 lasers at
the finish. One on the finish line , and one 10 metres either side of the
line (these two were for the ET's.) The unit at the start line gave a total
run time. The unit at the finish gave a read out that was then converted (
by a table they had) to an ET.

We only had time for two runs each. Time waits for no man..

cheers

Matt
