soft tops

Post by Matt Gunn » Thu Feb 08, 2001 2:28 am

It's interesting to me this whole soft top talk.

It would seem fairly obvious that at some stage the elements and constant
use would see the piece of plastic called the " back window " get a little
tired.

Care and thought will see it last a little longer , but at some stage they
let go. Our soft top is very new and looks great , but what did the old one
look like???. (nothing lasts forever now does it ...)

Not unzipping the window seems fairly lazy when a very easy action results
in a much cleaner look for your car. You would'nt want big creases and
tears in the body work would you ???

Please , please take the 30 seconds it requires to save yourself some money.

cheers
matt

Soft tops

Hi there.

I'm new to the list and the club, but have had 15 months of enjoying the
MX5 experience. I'm sure the question gets asked often, but has anyone
replaced their soft top? We're in Palmerston North, and the local
upholsterer has indicated around $400 to repair the deterioration to our
top. Given that it seems to be the original, and is on a 1990 car, I'm
guessing it won't last long anyway, and a new top now may be the best
answer. Any experiences / costs would be appreciated. Please forgive me if
this topic has been done to death!

thanks,

Peter Schroeder

Soft tops

Hi

I think it is a common question because the tops only last for a certain
period - 10 years seems ok if the car is not garaged. Also there are
many Jap imports which seem to have very worn tops with a certain amount
of rot and cracking occuring. I replaced mine last December for about
$1,200 fitted. I did not need a new waterstop or rip protector clips on
the side - these can cost extra if needed.

The top itself does not cost this much but fitting yourself is a bit too
risky for my liking, so paying for a fully fitted job was my choice.
The local Auckland club sponsor Al's Upholstery did the job very well.
