Anyone want some new wheels?

Post by Gary Morrison » Thu Feb 01, 2001 10:33 am

As part of the repair process for my car I need to replace my wheels. I have
been looking for something suitable locally, light-ish weight, good looks,
suitable offset, and reasonable price. Result - NOTHING.

So I think I am about to buy some in from the US, the ones I have chosen are
Kosei Racing K1's. These are 15 x 7 and weigh about 6kg or 13lb each and cost
US$139 a piece. They are currently very popular as an aftermarket wheel for
the MX-5 in the USA.

Would anyone else be interested is a set of these? I will order by sea freight
so cost should be close to that mentioned above, especially if there are a few
sets ordered. If you would like to see a picture of the wheel fitted to a car
I can email you one.

Gary,
I made some tentative inquiries at Mag and Turbo in New Lynn about getting
some Arrow three piece wheels made up. These are spun wheels and very light
but a bit dearer at around $2000 for 4x 15x6.5 (with a 195/50R15 tyre not
included).

I haven't made up my mind if I want to keep my 14x6.0 wheels or go to the
15" wheel. The larger wheel will give a wider selection of tyres and may
allow a brake upgrade

What offset are K1's Gary? Also what rubber would you put on them; a 195/50
or wider? At $US139 a piece the set will cost around $NZ1560 +freight I
think.

Clive,

The Kosei K1's come in 38mm and 45mm offset, but the 45mm offset is harder to
get. There is a good write up on the Miataforum from a guy who put the 38mm
offset ones on his car and drove it back to back against the stock wheels to
see if he could determine any problems from the offset being out of spec. He
concluded the subjective effect was very small and could be dialled out by
adjusting the amount of toe in. The spec for the M1 calls for within 5mm of
45mm. Most aftermarket wheels available here seem to be too heavy and have a
35mm offset.

I had TSW Hockeheim wheels on the car - about 8.6kg / 19lb. Tyres were
205/50R15.

Cost should be about $1300 plus freight at exchange rate of .44. Freight
should be only a couple of hundred dollars or so if there is more than one set
coming.

Gary,
I have checked my finances and I'm going to have to pass on the wheels.
I'll have to stick with the ones I already have.
