Geoff
In the current WOF regs a wof will be declined if there is a mix of
directional and non directional tyres on the vehcile at time of checking.
Space saver tyres are also not allowed on a vehicle at time of wof check.

Directional and non Directional Tyres

Post by zorruno » Thu Jan 25, 2001 9:25 am

I'd be worried about mixing any tyres left to right as it would be very
likely to upset the handling/cornering characteristics, but front to back?
Would make a difference in handling, but would be no different to using
cheap tyres all round I would have thought - which is WOF'able.

You asked the difference - I'm assuming the difference between directional
vs non-directional? Directional tyres are made in such a way that they are
designed to give performance benefits only if they are rolling in one
direction. They must be mounted on the car the correct way round. They
usually give better performance (and are more expensive) than
non-directional tyres. Directional tyres will have an arrow on them marking
correct rotating direction.

Anyway - even to ensure I got a WOF, I'm not sure whether I'd like to call
my MX5 'low-performance' ... :)

Tyre construction can also play a part. Have you ever seen a HIGH
performance motorcycle tyre after a serious thrashing. ( Motorcycle tyres
are usually directional.) As the tread wears and is chewed up left and left
tattered towards the edges, the join where the tread is wrapped around the
case of the tyre often opens up showing the overlap. With the tyre on the
correct way this is not a problem. With the tyre spinning in the wrong
direction there is potential to lose the tread.

I think the direction nature relates to their water pumping ability...
reverse them and in the wet they may be a problem.

Many thanks for the info

No it is not a query about a MX5

A Lady from work bought a Mazda Demio import from a Car Dealer Months ago.

The Warrant has just run out and she got rejected due to the above Mix.

I suggested she takes it back to the Dealer and ask how it got a Warrant in
the first place.
