Subject: insurance again

I know we have just about exhausted this subject but I need to know a few
more things. Is there anybody out there who owns a soft top MX5 and pays
an excess for malicious damage to the hood less than $1000?? For people
who own hard tops and soft tops, do you have a different excess when you
use the soft top?? My new insurance company assures me that ALL soft tops
have this high exccess, is this true or am I being scammed again???
(PS, my excess for accident is only $200 and I have a full no claims
discount and am over 25)

My excess is $750 on the soft-top damage, which I thought was bad. It may depend on where you live (I don't live in nasty old Auckland).

or.

Mine was $750 for any damage to soft top but is now $0 thanks to installation of approved alarm system.

No soft top excess at all (with AA Insurance), let alone one that is the
price of a new soft top!!! Total excess is $300, but we had to fit a high
quality alarm system to get the insurance. I wanted one anyway, so it
didn't matter. I think the problem is probably that you have a bad claims
record on soft top damage, so no insurer would want to cover this.

My excess is $250 regardless. Call a broker, eg. Heath Lambert they'll get
the best deal going for you.
Get a good alarm with 2 stage microwave sensor.

Deanna, have you told your prospective insurer about the previous
slashings?? If yes, then they reason that the chances of it happening again
are very high, hence the excess. If you haven't told them, then maybe you
are getting a raw deal. However having said that, you are supposed to tell
your insurer about previous incidents, whether you claimed or not.

May be best to go to a broker & let them shop round for you to get the best
price and excess.

AA Insurance, been with them for years and have 3 cars at the moment. No
claims history at all, I guess that helps too. If you don't have a claims
history, but have still had soft tops vandalised, a $1000 excess would
still make sense to an insurer, i.e. "we don't really want your business".
I agree with other advice, try going through a broker. I've insured with
AMI as well (when I had motorbikes) and they were pretty good too.

Hi all, obviously a distressing subject for some of us
I've just done some shopping around for insurance for a '94 MX5 valued at
$13500, no Under 25, alarmed and garaged, full no claims discount and
'over50!' living in Hamilton My findings are:

Colonial (UEB) current insurer: market val $384 xs $250

Tower market val $488

agreed $662

AMI agreed $348
$250, $0 for theft/malicious
damage

AA agreed $301
$300

State market $348
$300

NZI market $362
$1000 for softtop. Waived if
alarmed to NZ/AUstandards

Norwich (via ASB bank) agreed $368 $300

I get a lot out of the e-mail chat so hope this contribution helps.
Cheers

I've never made a claim at all so this is why I find it hard to believe
that I keep getting hit with such high excesses. I also have a good
alarm fitted that cost me close to $1000 which comes with an
installation certificate confirming that it meets requiremetns of
AS/NZS. Who do you insure with??
