Break in

Post by Chris \(web-ezi.com\) » Sat Nov 17, 2001 9:51 am

Hi MX5 ers

Can anyone help?

My MX5 was broken into last night, the roof has had 2 holes about 5-6 inches
big cut into it.

Can you advise the best place (I am in South Auckland) to get my car
repaired.

Sadly, due to recent money troubles, I had reduced my insurance cover down to
third party only so I'm on my own here.

Until I can find funds to repair/replace the roof any suggestion for a
temporary fix so at least I can still use my car.

Thanks

Christine Long

PS: Anyone want to buy a very sad 1992 Black Ltd MX5 ???

Chris, sorry to hear of your breakin -my was done a similar way after the
buggers broke into my garage. However I live in ChCh no real use for advice
but I can help you on a temporary repair- contact your local 3M agent and get
a roll of 845 tape ( I call it quarter to nine tape)- it is actually a book
repair tape and is clear. available width 37mm and I think 50mm. Give a quick
clean down with deteregent and the stuff will stick like billyo. How good is
the stuff well I am very involved with radio controlled model pylon racing(
model aircraft) and all we hold our engine cowling on with is this 845 tape-
our things are doing over 300 kph actual and never fails. We are using it in a
methanol/ castor oil environment and
have total faith in it- it also takes bending ok eg book spines.
Try it I know you will be impressed and it may cost about $8 a roll on
memory.

How do we know how fast our model aircraft are going...I own a radargun
so if anyone in ChCh wants to do some speed recording I'll come out and do it
for them...wasn't cheap but is our tool for wing shape and propeller
development.

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear about the break in, it's an unfortunate fact of life with
soft-tops. It's well worth considering a security system, but make sure you
get a dual stage microwave sensor with it. These have an exterior field that
chirps a warning if it detects movement near the car.
They are not cheap, but so far it's protected my car for the past 5 years in
the car theft capital of NZ. (Auckland)

I deeply sympathise with you as an owner of a siver 1991 MX5 that
has been slashed 4 times. I have had my roof repaired several
times by a guy called Erol at Newmarket Auto-trimmers, 5-7 Arawa
St, Grafton phone 3775126. He is so nice and pathched my car
with new black leather from $15-$25. He also felt sorry for me and
after the 4th visit for a patch he offered to let me pay off a new soft
top. The cost was about $13800 all up. I now have a really cool
alarm with immobilizer, and leave my doors unlocked at all times.
