colour change cost?

How much would it cost to repaint a silver 1991 MX5.
Is there much difference in price if I wanted to change
the colour as opposed to sticking to silver?

not sure for an MX5 - I've seen quotes from $1500 to $10000 for repainting
cars completely. I do know that Chic had their blue one done in a different
colour for about $2K - it was red - correct chic? I would have thought it
would be a bit more to change colour as you'd have to get the finish a lot
better than if you stripped down the existing paint and went over it. In
most cases, I'd expect you'd get the finish you pay for...

Also do you recommend anyone in
particular around Auckland?

Yes. Woodhead Panel and paint. Say you got the info from the NZ Club & if
you're a member, show your membership card. Ph 5704540. He is in Ellerslie,
oppersite McDs. Eric Woodhead is a nice guy, a club sponsor and also drives
an MX5.

My wife, Morven, changed the colour of her car. I did some work myself
(removing trim, handles etc)and we kind of got mates rates too. We had the
choice of paying $2000 for a respray the same colour or $2500 for a
different colour. I would imagine that you would have to pay $500-$1000 more
than this if you don't know anyone in the trade.

PS. I always thought silver would be a good colour to respray because then
the engine bay could stay the same colour and it would just look like bare
metal, rather than the wrong colour.

Hi ... just had a quote done on my 1990 red 3 weeks ago to repaint to glossy
black. Couldn't give me an exact but approx $3,500 - $4,000. If you're doing
a totally new colour the front windscreen needs to be popped out as well which
will also set you back a new rubber or whatever it is that is needed. That
price is for the whole job including taking apart and putting back together
again. Price from an excellent place here in Christchurch (they do all the cop
cars).

I just had a Red hardtop repainted white. Evidently red is the worst colour
to repaint as it will bleed through most other colours. All the red needs
to be stripped off first.

I know they are a club sponsor, but personally I haven't been impressed with
what I've seen of their work (on my car or Fletch's car). Having said that I
drove past there yesterday and they had done a car in chameleon paint. I
didn't stop to examine it, but with the paint at $1000 a litre you would
expect the job to be done well.

Didn't he sell it or has he got another one?

We got Morven's MX5 done at Car Works in Kelston. Mike there did a great job
and it was cheap. It did, however, take them ages to finish it. If I ever
get my MX5 resprayed I'll definately take it there, but I'll make sure I
have another car available to get around for a few weeks.
