racing helmet

Hi all,

Merry Christmas!

The list is a bit quiet but I guess is the time of the year.

Anyway, This is my first year in the MX5 Club and am really looking
foward to the track day in Feburary.

I was thinking today that I will need to get a helmet in order to
enjoy the run. I went to Red Baron this morning but they just seems
to stock motor cycle helmet...

Can you guys point me to the right direction? Where should I start? I
tried a $299 one and the sale representative said it will do it's job
well...

Any advice welcome.

Daniel,
Most people just borrow a motorcycle helmet for the day. It hardly seems worth buying one unless you plan on doing more than one or two track days a year.

Borrowing one is a good way to go unless you plan on driving in track days
or competing in motorsport events regularly. If you want to buy one however
you should be able to pickup a decent one for about $150 or so from any
motorcycle shop. The important thing to check is the standard that applies
to the helmet. The following standards are listed as being approved by
Motorsport New Zealand in their latest Motorsport Manual :

SA2000 (SNELL)
SA95 (SNELL)
SA90 (SNELL)
SFI SPEC 31.1 (SFI)
M2000 (SNELL)
M95 (SNELL)
SFI SPEC 31.2 (SFI)

It might pay to checkout the MSNZ website at http://www.motorsport.org.nz
and see what they have to say about helmets and standards - I'm not an
expert, just telling you what I know as I understand it.

I myself have a TTH helmet I picked up from a motorcycle shop on Barrys
Point Road (I forget the name of the store. It supports one of the above
standards and is okay (it gets scrutineered at each event) for all of the
motorsport I do (motorkhanas/autocrosses/hillclimbs/bent
sprints/rallies/rally sprints). It cost me about $150 from memory. It is
important to get one that fits properly, so if you're not sure get a sales
assistant to help you.
