Tyres (again)

Post by Grant » Tue Dec 10, 2002 4:43 pm

I have to admit the local club (Blenheim) had a run on Sunday and it was
very very WET!!! Anyway, 11 cars turned out.

I need new tyres for my '92, and the man at Tyreland suggested Yokohama S306
as I am not a racer, more a cruiser, although I do enjoy the windy bits but
nowhere near the limits of the car. These would cost $140.00 each incl GST,
fitting and balancing. Firestone TZ100 woudl cost $150 each.
What do people think of these or should I look further up the range, bearing
in mind I drive reasonable distances but not too hard.

Tyres (again)

I must admit that I've never heard of them. I suspect they are an 'economy
tyre'. Apart from less ultimate grip, cheaper tyres will affect the feel of
your car. I tried Conti ecocontacts, which aren't cheap anyway, they felt like
complete rubbish, mushy turn in, felt like the sidewalls rolled under,
terrible. I swapped them for Uniroyals.
Unfortunately for my bank balance I always buy tyres I can't afford, better to
have grip and not need it than vice versa.
See if you can try before you buy.

P.S My brother has Barum's on his 5, they aren't performance tyres as such,
but he likes them and he drives hard. I think they were $600 - 700 for 4.

Try Bridgestone Grid3's, I'm running Grid2's at the moment, they are
great, and they tell me the Grid 3 is even better.
I got a quote for the Grid 3's they were $135 fitted, balanced, that
seemed ok to me?

Are Grid3's the same as the Bridgestone Potenza GIII? These were
reccommended by the nice lady at the local Firestone outlet. They quoted
$159.00 fitted and balanced which is the price in their flyer. Not a lot of
competition here so hard to get the price reduced. I must admit I like the
idea of the Bridgestones at present after watching earlier discussions on
the topic. My present tyres are Kumho Power Racer II. No one seems to know
anything about them here either. The previous owner didn't get the wheel
alignment sorted so one is at its use by date, the other front one not too
far away while the rears have good tread left. I would prefer to replace all
4 though.

I should have added that the tyres are the standard original equipment size.
