OK, this seems to come up again and again, so I searched for (surprise
surprise) 'offset' on the MX5 club website. It came up with this page (as
#1)
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nz ... g00124.sht
which is from nearly 2 years ago and includes me debating my 40mm offset
with my huge 5mm spacers (205 45/16 tyres, 45mm offset wheels) among other
things. It has lots of opinions on people running smaller offset. +ve
and -ve opinions about tramlining, uneven surfaces, stability, etc.
My archive script hasn't picked up the links very well - just copy and paste
them, without the successive text.
It also gives this page http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.htm
which I think is the best description of wheel offset around. Ti(y)re rack
has a lot of other excellent descriptions of tyre related stuff
cheers

offset re[2]: wider wheels (was spacers)... and offset
Thanks zorruno, A couple of things I don't agree with,
changing offset does not change unsprung weight, this remains constant, the
leverage on the shock and spring does change though.
Different offset won't change wear rates on bushes, they are simple pivots and
the difference in travel between various offsets is negligible.
Notice how the offset reduces as wheel width goes up, just what Pete at
Marshall Tyres advised me.
