Electric aerial

Post by Grant » Tue Nov 26, 2002 11:26 am

Hi all.

A reader of the list has offered me the electric aerial off his 1994 MX5. I
would expect it will fit my 1992. He has asked me to make an offer. The
trouble is, of course, what is a fair price for a used (assume in good
condition) MX5 electric aerial?
Any ideas? I want to pay a fair price without making an insulting offer or,
for that matter, paying too much!

Grant in sunny Blenheim.

PS. Had two trips over the marble mountain in the last two days. 25km of
very windy excellent MX5 hill road, about 12km up one side and 13km down the
other. Trouble was I was I had to drive the 4WD!

I'd pay $100 for one because they are pretty hard to get.
I think I've seen them advertised for as much as $150.

according to an ad in Top Down April 2001, MX5Mart was selling the Factory
Electric aerial for a price of $150. Assume second hand, but you'd have to
ask Ross

(found with club website search of 'electric aerial mx5mart')

cheers

Id pay $150 as electric aerials are very hard to find. You only get them
on BRG cars ( one of which Ive just bought for dismantling) or some later
ones. From what Ive seen most pre 91 non BRG cars werent wired for the
electric aerial. There will be a fuse box and wiring plug by the aerial if
it is.If not you will have to run a feed from the radio. Also the mounting
plate welded to the inner guard for the electric aerial is different to
the standard one.Ross.

Electric aerial

Thanks for the info, Ross. Mine is a 1992 BRG and it is wired for the
aerial. I haven't checked to see if the mounting plate is there though. My
wife has the car today so I will check on its return. It has a $15.00
Warehouse manual aerial at present. This was a bit long to fit, but by
cutting the plastic tube down slightly, it fits ok. Just means I can't
retract it fully. The manual one on the car when I bought it was badly
damaged.
I offered the person $100.00 but looks like I better up that from what you
say and what another reply here said as well. If I don't get a reply soon,
do you still have the one on the BRG you have available please?

Thanks again,

Grant.

Be sure that it works fine. The serated plastic tail that winds up inside
the aerial ( retracts the aerial ) does wear and cracks. Costs about $65 to
replace from a Mazda dealer.
