RE;Tyres (Grid lll price)

It seems that there are not too many options for tyres for the mx; grids,
yokohamas, Toyo (expensive) and presumably some less suitable options. Is it
practical to buy via the US, perhaps as a bulk order- the options seem greater
and the prices good, e.g. 4x Pirelli P4000 for US $180 plus P and P, or Falken
Azenis 195/60/14 for US $59.95 each (or 205/50/15 for $68.95). These seem to
perhaps represent good value, and were from the first place I looked
(rspeed.net). Any experience with importing such items? I guess they are
heavy so perhaps postage and packing is quite expensive. Any duty issues?

My Re-711's are on their last legs... But >they've been discontinued, and

Add 11.5% duty for tyres (motorcycles ones are free of duty, for some
reason) + 12.5% GST

Freight will be the killer, possibly twice the tyre price. Unless you know of
a container coming in for someone.
Motorcycle tyres don't carry duty because none are made in NZ.

NZ manufactures car tyres, not motorcycle tyres. The tariff is for NZ
industry protection.

Note that GST is also paid on the value of the freight and insurance, not
just the cost of the tyres, which puts the price up a bit more. I expect
freight on 4 tyres would be pretty high.

I've never heard anyone discuss using Michelin Pilot SX-GT tyres on the
MX5. They were fitted as original equipment on my 2000 SE (195/50/15).
Cornering capabilities phenomenal - have never had them slide. The only
times they have lost grip have been on the rears, and then there is just a
slight twitch as the car "hops" a few cms and the grip is back. This has
only happened under power in very tight bends. Fronts have never let go at
all. Tends to only happen if the road surface is a bit uneven as well.

Note that I don't drive anywhere near as hard in the wet as in the dry
(past bad experiences in other cars have re-programmed my brain for wet
roads), so can't comment how good they are at the limit on wet roads.

Road noise, very quiet. No obtrusive road roar under normal driving, though
obviously louder on coarse chip. Can't get them to squeal on bends. I get a
small chirp at about the point they feel like they may lose grip, that's
all.

After just over 20,000 kms the rears have 4 mm tread left and the fronts 5
mm. Seem to wear OK.

I've seen a comparison test on the Web that rated them just behind Yokohama
A520's for handling and just ahead when comfort and noise were included in
the rating as well.

The question is, does anybody stock them in NZ and what would they cost?
Anybody know? I haven't needed to find out, but I'd certainly use them
again if I had the option.

Phil,

If you did manage to get a bulk order together, and I've tried this without any response from NZ Club members, the cheapest and best way to freight is Ocean Freight where you pay by the cubic metre. If you had an order value of NZ$1-2k it would probably work out OK. Transit time is about 4 weeks. I brought in an exhaust system, and full suspension kit this way about 5 years ago.

There isn't any duty on bike tyres because they are all imported, so no
manufacturing protection, that was what I was told anyway.

Hi Geoff

Pressures have tended to vary a bit. I used to run 26 PSI as that is the
recommended Mazda pressure. Then as a result of various bits and pieces on
this discussion group I bumped them up to 30 for a while. These days I run
them at 28. Seems like the best ride/handling compromise for my use.
Incidentally, my tread depth measurements were at the outside rim of the
tyre, they were all 1mm more than that in the centres. Does that say
anything about tyre pressures or my driving, or is outside edge wear being
higher normal?

Extra wear in the centre indicates excessive tyre pressure.

I might have read that wrong, I'll try again, wear on both edges = low
presssure. Wear in centre = high pressure.

Hi Tim
Just checked all my tyres from outside to inside all at 5mm pressures at
28(not the spare)
and the new mileage31696km.Did Nelson(from Brightwater to Home Bishopdale
CHCH) 4.25Hrs 400km on 30 litres into a big southerly wind.on Labour Weekend
via the Lewis Pass.
When do I have to replace the tyres and any idea on the price.
Only had the Hood down part of the way due to Hail, Snow and intermittent
Rain.
Did pass some MG,s thou yes some new ones.
They have no Grunt on the Hilly Sections and Corners but perhaps it could be
the Drivers??

Kind Regards
Geoff
