Style Bars
I'm a proud new owner of an MX5 - have been resisting temptation for a while,
but when the IRD generously returned a large chunk of the money which I had
foolishly given them by mistake I set it aside for the day when the right car
came along. This happened on Fathers Day in the shape of a 1997 SR Ltd in
Sparkle Green - apparently only 316 were made in this colour, and I have not
yet seen another in New Zealand.
As a husband and father the car is a little impractical, but that's what the
Subaru and the Chariot are for. However, my wife has expressed some concern
that there is little protection for my head in the event of a roll, and while
I am well insured she'd rather have me than the money (rather flattering, I
feel). I don't like the look of a full roll bar, which would provide the best
protection I know (done some rally navigating in my distant past), so a good
style bar is probably the best compromise. If I am going to fit one, it needs
to be chrome (the SR has chromed mag wheels and mirrors as standard) and it
would make sense to have one which could also take a wind deflector, as I
understand the one on the Mk 2 really works.
My question is - who in NZ makes/sells/installs style bars? I haven't found
any obvious source and as I have so far found the MX5 Club to be a major
source of information I thought I would ask.
Many thanks

Hi Simon,
Welcome to the world of the wee jellybean
check out www.partsworld.co.nz, if you would like to call Mark Brown at
Mazline (same company) here in Christchurch, they source the chrome ones
locally, and they are a fair price, I guess he would either send them
too you, or put you in touch with someone in the Auckland neck of the woods.
Hope this helps,
Biff

style bars
Hi Phil
Thanks for that. I can see why you took it off - your car looks much better
without it. Having looked at a few style bars, I think I will go for the twin
hoops rather than the square bar like yours, so I'll say thanks but no thanks
to your bar. Your car looks amazing, especially all that red leather!
Cheers

Despite 1 or 2 lucky escapes in the club, I wouldn't rely on most style bars
for roll over protection, thats why they're called 'style' bars. Better than
nothing though.
Don't forget that the windscreen header is re-inforced too.
