I was intrigued to note that the headrest speakers in my MX5 appeared to be
out of phase, creating a complete null in the sound right in the centre. After
reading about this problem on the Miata site, I decided to check the wiring. I
found that on both seats, not only were the speakers out of phase, but the two
wires from the left cahnnel was connected to one side of each of the two
speakers, with the right channel connected to the other side of the two
speakers! Couldn't get it more wrong if you tried. I removed the pins from the
plug under the seat and re-arranged them for correct operation. Now, instaed
of the sound being nulled to the extent of wondering whether the speakers were
going at all, I had to reduce the level to the headrest speakers so they
didn't drown out the door speakers. Well worth the effort.
This is probably old news for many owners, but it might be of help to newer
owners.
Anybody know of a source of small analogue car clocks? I would like to add a
real (analogue) clock to my MX5. The clock on the Sony stereo I have is too
difficult to read. Not sure where I would mount one, but I'm sure there is
room somewhere!
It is very pleasant travelling around Marlborough under lovely sunny skies,
especially as I can use my MX5 for work a lot of the time. The joys of being
self employed...you get to chose the work vehicle!! Sure beats driving the
Isuzu Bighorn all the time.

I think this may help you on the wiring side.

I wired the speakers in the parallel mode. The stereo I now have installed is
a Sony with 4 amplifier outputs. The colour code on my car wiring to the under
seat connectors is now Red/blue and Red/yellow for the right speakers and
Blue/red and Blue/white for the left channel. The speaker plug wiring from the
speakers to the under seat plug is Blue/black and Blue/white for one speaker ,
Blue/yellow and Blue/red for the other. I'm not sure now which was right or
left. With the aid of a small flat blade screwdriver, it is possible to remove
the pins from the seat plug so you can reposition them to mate correctly with
the car socket. You can insert the pins into the socket to check the correct
layout, take a note of this then re-insert the pins into the plug housing. The
easiest way to check for correct phasing is, after determining the right from
the left speakers, is to reverse the wires to one of the speakers while using
a mono source. An AM radio station is the easy way to do this. When phased
correctly, there will be an improvement in the bass compared to when the
speakers are reversed. Use the balance control on the stereo to check that you
have the right and left around the correct way, and that they are not cross
wired. With the balance fully to one side, the other side speaker should be
completely silent.
Good luck,
Grant.
