Parts bulletins - Mazda parts research...
Hi there - if any MX5 club members here haven't seen this latest parts
bulletin, it contains reduced battery price and hard top mounting parts.
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/news/e-news/msg00057.sht
this was second to reduced soft top pricing here
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/news/mazda_ne ... mazdatops/
I'm doing a little research into what other parts you guys have found that
are quite expensive from dealers, items that are regular, common replacement
items for MX5s etc, or dealer items that you think are lots cheaper
elsewhere.
Any thoughts??

zorruno, how about the regular maintenance stuff ... North Shore Mazda quoted me ~$30 for the oil filter !
Went with Repco instead, got a teensy bit of startup clatter now ...

THIRTY DOLLARS!!! Even with the exchange rate... I paid US$4.25 each for
the last batch I bought.

Yes you'll find that cheaper oil filters don't feature correct bypass pressure calibration and this prabably causes your start-up 'clatter' also those cheaper filters are made from inferior materials and wont filter all the crap from the oil!stick with original filters if you're keen on you're engine lasting the distance

Yes but that inflated price is still rubbish (actually criminal) ... the
$4.25 I paid was for a MAZDA part, not a "same as"

What about replacement window motor units - at $450 odd I'd consider driving
round with the window up.

Well, Ric here in good ole NewZealand a new Miata costs $45,000!

Well let's do the math... 45000/23000(us) = 1.956... 1.956x4.25 = 8.31
Like I said, even with conversion/exchange factors, $30 is absurd... that
would be $15.34 here
And I'm talking genuine Mazda Parts...

US market = big volume. Check the comparative prices on any consumer goods
item. You guys have it much better.

But wouldn't a good portion of that factor into the 45000 vs 23000 (along
with the exchange rate)??? I mean with a 261% markup you could have a 100%
import duty and still make it worth your while ordering a case or two (or
more) of oil filters at a time. Split among the club members... hmmmmmm

May I suggest you use actual exchange rates to make your point (and
subtract .01 from the NZ dollar rate in your calculations as you can't
exchange money at the primary bank rate), ie right now its .42 NZ (.43-.01)
to each US dollar or $1US = 2.32NZ for the average NZer
