tyre trouble

Post by Ian Watson » Thu Jan 31, 2002 10:19 am

Hi,

Had a gr8 weekend (not). Got a flat just north of Kaiwaka on camping trip in
Northland. last Saturday. Put the space-saver on and "just" fitted the flat
tyre in the boot. Had to pile all our camping stuff on the passenger (she
wasn't pleased).

Then limped back to Kaiwake where the tyre place said the tyre couldn't be
repaired. Since it was Sat afternoon decided not to head further North,
since if I got another puncture I'd be buggered, so turned back and called
at every tyre shop on the way Back to AKL - nobody had a 195/50 R 15 of any
make.

Buy the time we'd limped back to AKL (dam 80k is slow). All the tyre shops
were closed. Sunday & Monday failed to find any place open that had 195s of
a reputable brand. So had to wait until Tuesday to get a replacement.

Incidentally Bridgestone no longer make RE111's and the replacement S02's
cost $450 each!!! and have to be specially imported (well that's what
Firestone direct said)

I'm seriously thinking about keeping a spare 5th tyre in the garage for long
weekend emergencies.

A cheaper replacement is the Bridgestone RE711. Still a very good tyre.
185/60 R14's cost around $175.
Clive.

I found an excellent Auckland tyre shop

Tyre City at 167 Sunnybrae Rd, Glenfield. Ph 4435865

The guy recommended 'Barum' tyres over Bridgestone and I got 195/50's for
$159 each. The Bridgestones were a similar price.

I have just recently replaced the (slick) Yokohamas on my car with 4x
195-50/14 Bridgestone Grid II. They are magnificent and make a huge
difference over the yokos.

The very nice bloke at Firestone also gave me free puncture repairs for the
life of the tyres :)

Cost was a comfortable 127.00 each (GST Incl)

I also give the Bridgestone Grid II and specifically the guys at Firestone
in Newmarket the thumbs up.

They have replaced three tires (that's right ---- a bit of bad luck --- the
tire on one rim twice) damaged by road side hazards and rotated my tires
for free at the 15K mark.
