Tyre Query

Post by jeff » Wed May 22, 2002 12:18 pm

another datapoint -

I bought some new Falken Ziex tyres which look pretty good (directional) and should have a long life, but have less absolute grip than performance tyres. 185/60 14 , $130 fitted at Budget Tyres in Wairau Rd, Auckland. They're only just starting to show signs of wear after 7 hard (but fun) months. They do squeal when pushed though which is the reason I *personally* wouldn't get them again, but for normal folks they're a bit better than average, so go for it!

Can anyone suggest the best value tyre for my car? It is not used on the track
just day-to-day stuff.

Anyone recently fitted tyres that can help? Is there such a thing as a budget
unidirectional?

Thanks

Try Bridgestone Grid 2's -- a directional tyre that performs very well wet & dry
at a realistic price. They last very well (although this of course depends on
how spirited your driving is ) I've got no complaints with mine (34,000k so far)
and they are available in 185/60/14 size. Someone on this list reckoned they are
on special at Firestone for around $120 each???

hey, he did say "value" and "day-to-day" tyres ... actually they're ok for drifting too, just a bit noisey/un-subtle ... :D

How much is it to replace one of these usually on the mx5?

Hi David,
Depends on what you call budget. I've used Uniroyal RTT 1 and 2's with good
results, great wet grip and 40,000 km life. I currently have Michelin MXF
Sports, wet grip is fractionally less, dry grip much better. All of these
are very comfortable and quiet.
My brother has Barum's on his MX5 and likes them. We've also got Yoko A539's
on my wife's Skyline and they are very good too, but I have heard they work
better on heavier cars. Talk to Leon at Marshall Tyres, if you're in Auckland.
Good Luck
Lou

Interesting tyre Lou, how much, and in what size do you have
them?

MXF SPORT

Michelin Passenger Car Tyre Range:

A sporty high performance tyre for the sport driving lover, providing
excellent grip in dry and wet conditions with good firmness for precise
cornering performance.

Asymmetric tread pattern provides high rigidity on the loaded outside
shoulder during cornering, but as the load is transferred from outside to
inside the rigidity is decreased in keeping with the applied load, ensuring
maximum amount of rubber is in contact with the road, delivering a high level
of grip in wet and dry conditions.

Low aspect ratio profile gives a high lateral carcass (sidewall)
stiffness and due to the wide flat tread the MXF Sport achieves maximum belt
rigidity delivering precise cornering performance.

Rugged performance appearance with rim protection to protect expensive
alloy wheels against damage.

Wide centre groove specially profiled for MXF Sport for efficient water
dispersal.

TYPICAL VEHICLE MATCHES:
. Holden Vectra . Honda Integra Type R, Civic Vti-R . Mazda MX5
. Mitsubishi Lancer . Nissan Pulsar SSS . Subaru WRX . Toyota Celica SX

That would be me: Bridgestone Grid IIs 185/60/14 at Firestone on Thorndon
Quay, Wellington for $130 each incl balancing and fitting. They didn't
actually need much balancing (5g - 10g). The guy says they have a stack in
their warehouse they have to clear, because the Grid IIIs were launched a
month ago.

Can anyone comment on the Bridgestone Dual Layer tread, which has a
different compound after 50% wear, to ensure consistent wet performance ?
Does that mean a change in road noise or wear ?

I have Bridgestone RE-711's that claim the same dual compound
construction.

I havent noticed any fall-off in grip yet... but I'm only about
half-way through them now... its the next half that is the real test,
eh?

Fletch.
