Incredimail - off subject
At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old fart (which I may be, depending onKeep persivering with incredimail, mine is fine and it is soo
much fun to use
whether you think I'm old or not), I'd like to place my vote *against* using
Incredimail on the MX5 list.
As far as I've seen so far, it offers nothing to the discussion, and it increases
the size of the emails by about 10 times. Most emails on this list are in the
vicinity of 2k (more if people use sloppy quoting) - the Incredimail posts I have
seen are usually about 25k.
I can think of two arguments against Incredimail, neither of which I expect to
convince anyone with:
1. It takes me longer to download my email, and for nothing (this is
especially annoying to be watching the email download, thinking that
something interesting is arriving in the post, only to find that someone has
made a 5 word response to a post plus an irrelevant background image.
As far as I'm concerned, Incredimail posts go in the same category as spam
& get deleted promptly.
2. If a message is 10 times normal size & that has to get emailled to every
single person on the list, it does accumulate to something substantial.
Admittedly, this is a small list & the load is not huge to start with, but most
things cost something in this world - if cost is going to be increased, I want
to get some value for it.
OK, I accept that I don't have any good hard reasons (like, it's costing us a
perceptible amount of money) and it all comes down to whether you think
that Incredimail is improving the quality of the list.
If you are going to use Incredimail on the list, please at least use it for
something good - maybe background images of cars?
I encourage you to use Incredimail for personal emails (off-list) if that is what
makes you happy - happy people are nice people (unless I'm in a *really*
grumpy mood, in which case I can be grumpy at anything).
Karl.

zorruno doesn't let the background images in, just go to message and select plain text. Problem solved!

email encoding & still get downloaded when I retrieve mail from my POP
server (ie. normal email access, nothing strange).
I can tell my computer not to display the images, but that doesn't make the
emails any faster/smaller & risks me missing out on something that may
have been relevant (like the tyre pictures Gary included a little while ago -
they were relevant to the message)
I just don't like waste for no value.
Karl.

I'm not a club member but follow the list and I gotta agree with Karl as well

('stepping in' noises) Hello - I'm the list administrator. You may have
heard of me. I'm not a fan of 'fancy' type emails either sorry - but the
list software I use is not configureable enough to strip out the fancy bits
& leave the useful stuff - it will either send the mails through or bounce
them to me for approval if some rules are met.
Also attachments make files bigger - which get archived on the club web
site - which uses space - which clubmembers pay for. There are other
reasons, see http://www.expita.com/nomime.html
I have set the list to stop images, but I haven't set it to bounce HTML or
MIME email, because hey - this is an MX5 list, not /. or NZLUG. So far we
have been pretty good at keeping things on topic and happy. A few hiccups
here and there, but by a small minority. If you send one through, It may or
may not get to the list, based on whether I get time to approve it or not.
All of this makes work for me & I don't really like work if I can avoid it
It takes up valuable MX5 driving time.
This and other tips to keep this list a happy place are listed here

thanks all & I hope it is fine for all the club events on this weekend!

Try www.mailwasher.net, a good kiwi product. It allowsThe images are part of the email encoding & still get

you to automatically delete unwanted emails at your ISP,
BEFORE you have downloaded them. I have about 6 rules,
no HTML, no foreign language sets, no anonymous sender/receivers,
and that gets rid of about 99% of all unwanted messages
for me.
It has the ability to look inside the email header, so
should be able to identify Incredimail messages and
mark them for deletion.
