It should be deemed a rollbar from an NZTA perspective so shouldn't need certifying. I believe if you keep it out of the "A" area of the car you're fine, which is essentially if you can sit there and touch it, it needs an authority card, if it takes up the "B" space of the car (rear passengers) it needs a cert.warrior wrote:Furai: have you have your car complied with the cage in? If you had did you have any problems getting it done?
This was how I understood it from my certifier when I spoke to him about it 6 months ago

Yeah. The rules on this are somewhat inconsistent. I think from a WOF/cert-threshold point of view it needs to be completely behind a vertical plane at the back of the rearmost seats. If not, then technically it needs certing. Some bar designs will be partially above the standard headrests... will you fail a WOF on that.. maybe not?Snapfrozen wrote: It should be deemed a rollbar from an NZTA perspective so shouldn't need certifying. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from memory I think specifically it needs to be behind a plane drawn parallel to the back of the seats, doesn't it?marcellarius wrote:I think from a WOF/cert-threshold point of view it needs to be completely behind a vertical plane at the back of the rearmost seats.
i.e. it needs to be behind a plane drawn something like / rather than like | if that makes sense.

It clearly states,
" the bars are positioned:
behind, following a plane extending upward, parallel to the back of the backrest
on the rear-most seat; and
in such a way that the head-restraint would provide protection from head
contact with any bar section during a crash.
"
So for a rollbar that meets that no Cert is required.

Mr. Shine: I think you're right, the diagram in the LVV interior impact standard agrees with that.
I'm not sure how those rules apply to seats with a fixed head rest like in the MX5, nor does it specify how the seat should be adjusted when determining the C-zone -- for the A-zone it's defined with the seat at its mid point in a normal driving position.

I have been told the biggest problem with a roll cage in a mx5 is not the top part but the sides of the roll cage. That is wear peoples heads will hit in a side impact.
My roll cage looks just like yours furai and I would say someones head could easily hit the roll cage.
But not on your drivers side due to the seat you have.
I have a style bar in my car now and it has never been questioned in my car at WOF time so I am guessing the roll cage will be the same. (I hope)

roll bars in MX's that bolt to the floor are always going to be very suspect with regard to the "A" zone.. those designed like the brown davis and hard dog bars are better in this regard, although the hard dog styles will impede your seatbelt operation...for my car i am re-making a brown davis copy but with hard dog rear stays...its just a trackday/autocross bar so no need for full MSNZ bullshit regs

Went to a trackday on Thursday, had a good bit of fun. Realised that Yoko A drives are good but no where near good enough for track. So I had to put my S Drives back on to get some grip.
The A drives snapped real fast Haha
Got a short video of me pushing fairly hard
