best price for MX 5 on trademe ever?

Post by Number5 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 3:45 pm

Hello people, I'm new here and heared you guys are best in country :)

Anybody knows would this be best deal for MX 5?

$6000 for 1998 MX 5 automatic, done 85,000 km

Sounds very good price but quite cheaper than any other MX5 on site. and it seems not popular compare to other menual MX 5 which has more high miles done. (perheps auto is not popular transmission??)

I'm newbie so anybody kindly give me good opinion how to buy MX 5 and what to avoid?

And any question I should ask If I view MX 5 in person?

Your help would be much appreciated. Cheers

MX-5s are a true driving car, they're designed to be enjoyed while driving. Personally I don't enjoy a car when I'm not doing anything while driving, so automatics aren't fun to drive. If you want an MX-5 as a fun car you'll probably be disappointed if it's automatic, unless you know you want an automatic.

It sounds like you're not very experienced with cars and mechanics, so if you're unsure when buying a car it's a good idea to have a professional check the car to make sure there aren't any hidden problems.

EDIT: If you're wanting a reliable person to buy from, check out MX5 Mart. Ross is very helpful and has a selection of well-presented, reliable MX-5s for sale that he has repaired and restored himself. He's also an excellent source for parts.

Seconded. Spend a little extra and get a manual, will be well worth it, I have heard that automatic MX5s are rubbish. Main thing to check when buying an MX5 would be the condition of the roof. Other than that, ask for a service history, and check if the cambelt has been done. They are pretty simple cars, not much to go wrong with them

If you must have an auto, you can still have a lot of fun driving it. I have
had an NA, NB and now an NC, all autos. Each one has been better than the
previous one. The NB can be held in any gear you want and this means you can
enjoy the response on a winding road by keeping the revs up. Agreed not as
much fun as a manual but not far off it.
The 6 speed auto in the NC is very good and with the paddles on the steering
wheel, a lot of fun too.
I have autos as I have arthritis which flares up at times making driving a
manual a painful experience. An auto I can always drive. Are they rubbish?
Definitely not!
My NA had done well over 200,000Km when I sold it and it was still running
very well.
If you can drive a manual then buy one in preference to the auto. Otherwise,
buy an auto and you won't regret it.

Grant.

Ive sold autos to older people who due to leg/ hip problems cant drive a manual.
Also if you have to commute in Akl traffic then a autos not a bad choice.
Weather a auto or manual when the tops down and your cruising along doesnt really matter.

That is the reason we bought our NA8 Auto as my wife was working in town at the time. We shopped around for a while to find the right one as I insisted if it had to be auto, it had to be a 1.8.
I would prefer a manual but the Auto still goes well, albeit a little thirsty on the petrol.
