jack up both rear wheels , tur one by hand, if the other goes in the same direction it is a lsd, if it goes backwards it is not,

The above trick doesnt work for the Torsen style LSDs that 1.8 mx5's came with.

My method would be
1.find open area
2.turn full lock
3.rev car to limiter
4.drop clutch
5. if LSD-Enjoy :D

one wheel on the grass one on the road some heavy acceleration is good to tell.

_if your LSD is very worn it will behave weirdly sometimes kicking inside wheel and other times locking both together< i had one that i used on the gravel roads allot and this happened to it after a while.

shimms can be replaced !!!

Silly question I know, but I'm going to attempt these methods but what would the outcome be if I had an lsd and if I didn't have one?

if you just drop the clutch in a straight line you will surly get both weels going at first because of the emense pressure. - regardless of lsd or not

the best whey is the one wheel on slippery surface and one on hard and to get rolling before applying the throttle - power is going to be plenty to spin both wheels even stock with one wheel on tar and one on grass if you mark the tar then you are lsd if not you will spin the grass wheel heaps leaving a trench :(

I thought that the Torsen diffs act like an open diff when there is a massive difference in grip though?

Both early and late model torsen can supply 2.5x torque to one wheel over the other. Apparently.

I got my '95 Torsen diff on Saturday and it's possible to see the helical gears through the filler plug hole.

Not sure if this is possible when it's installed in the car but I reckon with a torch it would be doable.

Also the later Torsen's are a different design but I think it would still be pretty obvious.

You can see the torsen gears through the filler hole when it's in the car. Thats how I confirmed mine was a torsen diff.
