auto hold button

Post by johngalt » Mon Oct 26, 2009 7:37 pm

:? Hi guys, I tried to find if this topic was brought up before, so apologies if I have doubled up....
What is the best way and when to use the above hold button.
There seems to be alot of different opinions on the use of compared to o/d.
Thanks for your input

auto hold button

Post by Grant » Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:06 pm

If I remember correctly (I sold my NB 1800 auto 12 months ago when I bough
an NC 6 speed auto) the hold button when in Drive, will select 3rd gear. It
will hold that gear and not drop to a lower one. You can use the auto
selector to then select 2 or 1. The 'box will stay in what is selected.
With the older gearbox, the O/D button would drop from 4th to 3rd but would
still change automatically to a lower gear as needed. Same with 2nd, it
would drop to 1 if needed. The manual selection just limited the highest
gear the gearbox would select, not the lowest.
On the newer one with the Hold option, the gearbox stays in whatever is
selected by the driver.
The 6 speed in the NC is different again as it has the Tiptronic option.
This will change down if it deems it necessary but will not change back up
unless the driver does so manually. Quite disconcerting when you forget you
are in manual mode and slow to a stop then take off. The car stays in 1st!
Now if only the manufacturers could standardise on which way the Tiptronic
system should operate!
The MX5 you pull the gear selector back to go up a gear while my 4WD you
pull it back to go down! Thankfully the MX5 has steering wheel paddles while
the 4WD doesn't.

auto hold button

Yes. Switching it off is the only way to allow the gearbox to select 4th
gear. Once you get to those winding hilly parts of the drive though, use it
to hold the lower gears to get the engine revs up and not being annoyed by
the gearbox deciding to change at the wrong time. You don't have the delay
while it decides to change down on the corners. Much more fun. Not exactly
the manual experience but much better than leaving it to itself.

our 1.6 auto only shows 3 speeds is this correct ??
we have 1,2,3,N,R and Park. We have the hold button also
If it has 4 speeds why does it only show 3 ?

auto hold button

If the hold button is off(out) then all 4 speeds can automatically be
selected by the gearbox. The numbers by the selector refer to the gear that
will be held when the hold button is pressed in. So with the selector beside
the 3 marking, pressing the hold button will lock the gearbox in 3rd. Move
the selector to 2 or 1 to lock it in 2nd or 1st. You can't lock it in 4th as
the hold button must be released to allow 4th to be selected. There really
is no need to lock it in 4th anyway so it does make sense when you think
about it.
The earlier auto box had an O/D button instead but it wouldn't hold in any
gear, just limit the highest gear that could autamiatically be selected.
