Im back...MX5 number 3. Make that 4.

Post by Timmo » Thu Apr 14, 2016 7:59 pm

Hi guys,
I bought another MX5...this time, back to a NA in British Racing Green :) Body is tidy, there are few mechanical things to sort out (i.e. weeping rocker cover gasket, gearbox sounds pretty rough...not sure if it's a throwout bearing or something else).

So, when's the next hoon.....I mean, sedate country drive? 8)

Any ideas what would be causing this gearbox noise?
1) Doesn't change between clutch engaged or disengaged
2) Is speed dependent, not engine speed dependent.
3) Sounds a bit like i've got straight cut gears (a whirring) but occasionally get a squealing too.

I haven't checked the PPF alignment...the other thought is the clutch release bearing but any other thoughts would be helpful?

Does it happen in all gears? Coasting in neutral?

Check/replace transmission oil?

sounds like you have a dry or seized universal joint on the drive shaft.

Hard to tell if it happens in all gears as it's speed dependent and it does happen when coasting...but generally I'd say yes. The previous owner said the prop shaft was rebuilt....so the Universal joint could be a possibility....its coming from around the gearbox so it'd be the front one if so.

Make that Mx5 number 4. I decided to buy another one, this time already supercharged, caged, certed etc etc and the other sold within 3 hours of me putting it on trademe (didn't even get a chance to put it on here)

On the drive home from Masterton, a hose came off the oil cooler so had to get towed home :( ($690 later). It has an oil pressure switch/light so I managed to shut it off pretty quick...I won't know if the engine is fine until I hook every thing back up, fill it with oil and restart it.

The supercharger is pumping 6 psi....and this thing has a huge intercooler which necessitates an aftermarket front bumper, the style of which i'm not too keen on.
So, a question: Just how big an intercooler do I actually I need for 6ps?! This thing seems like overkill so I'm contemplating reducing its size so I can put the standard bumper back on.

My supercharger is non-intercooled and is running 4-6 psi. Not sure as I haven't really looked at any of the stuff my ecu puts out and it has a not great tune so the knock sensor violently kicks in (wasn't an issue when I first had the supercharger running but then I fiddled around with stuff which is never a good idea). Really should sort it out... along with everything else on the car.....

Great work timmo. It all depends on how close your tune is to detonation. If it's tuned to within an ounce of its life, taking off the cooler will cause predetonation, but if it's mildly tuned, it should be fine.

For reference, how big is that intercooler? The one in mine (turbo) is 550x265x65 core I beleive (biggest I could fit) but that's cos it's for track duty.

By the looks of yours and some of those components, I'd say it's running too close to det to remove that intercooler.

On a side note, may I be cheeky and ask what it set you back?

Ill keep it in there for now...the weight of a fiber glass front bumper also doesn't fit with the 'light weight baby!' philosophy!
I suspect that that size was installed for 'future proofing' the car....it really needs proper engine management (only running a fuel pressure reg and a timing retarder...and a B6 ECU on the BP???!!!) as it pretty much sits right in the rich (narrowband, AFR gauge)

This will be tracked as well but has been used for more autocross events (i.e.high throttle, low speed, sideways) so it's also got a huge oil cooler there too.

Latest drama: Diff has blown and I can put my hand on my heart and say I haven't been driving it hard!

So, what are my options:

1) Replace with an open diff until I decide what to do (i.e. try and source 1.8 diff, prop and halfshafts)
2) Replace with another VLSD...and hope that doesn't pop.
3) Order replacement internals ("overnight parts from Japan")....$$$$$$$$$!
4) Get it welded until I decide what to do? (Is that even legal?)

Anything else I've missed? Oooorr anyone got a VLSD lying around?

Pretty sure I've got a spare vlsd. I don't want to part with it, but maybe the karma will convince someone to sell me their Torsen, axles, stubs and driveshaft.

Edit: sorry timmo, turns out it's a locky
