Haven't been on here in a dam long time - Have just run out of time with life etc. Am cleaning up my rebuilt engine at the moment and have a dilemma. Both my thermostat housings have the fucked hard line.

I remember Ross has these:

But I'd like to avoid him like the plague and I don't want to buy a whole new housing. Options?

buy a 1/8" bspt tap. drill the old one out and tap for a new hose fitting in there.....easy. i use loctite 3805 to seal up stuff like that. best stuff ever.

You'll either have to tap the housing and put in a 1/8th bsp fitting (make sure its 1/8" not 1/4" as youll crack the housing) or replace the whole thermostat housing ~$150 new from mazda

I successfully soldered the hole in the lower one on our NB. Need to remove it though

Given that I have a whole motor I probably have the lower too. Remember I'm up the road so fire me a txt if you want to have a perv at it.

I wouldn't trust a used one. they fail all the time. you can buy the part from Mazda or drill and tap a fitting in. I have no idea how easy it is to get the old tee out and fit another Mazda one. but the drill tap method will work and hold.

I wouldn't trust a second hand one either, you have to ask the question is it worth a motor? A motor needs water and oil or it's Buggered it's as simple as that.....

Do it with a new one, or if you can wait a little bit IIRC they do an improved one in the states thats aftermarket, it won't corrode on you.

I've done this with the engine in the car, its a prick of a job, do it properly while its easy or you'll be swearing away for a few hours while you do it again.

How are they actually held in? do you drill the old one out? are the new ones larger diameter?

They pull out ,we just screw a bolt up the guts and work it out,The replacement pipe's are exact dimensions ,We had these custom made oversea's for us.
Just quietly tap them back into place with a bit of liquid sealer.
We sell them as a pair.
