V8 conversion
Hi, new to this site and just thought I'd let whoevers out there know that I am well under way into fitting a early toyota 4v alloy v8 into a NA. Just got motor back from reconditioners and is mounted on the subframe. Engine bay is prepped and ready. Gearbox is W55, have had to fab a fair bit. Bell housing, sump, engine mounts, headers, etc.
Will try to post some pics if anyone is interested. Cheers.

Next job on the list is the gearbox mount. Have welded reinforcing plates onto both sides of the tunnel and will use these to bolt up cross member. The original frame will then be incorporated into that member.
After that its finish the exhaust (really tight on the drivers side), modify the power steer hoses, make a drive shaft, get a bigger radiator made and saving the worse bit for last, move the clutch cylinder. Lots of other minor things but nothing too major. Will need to do a bit of surgery on the bonnet to clear the carb and air cleaner.

That's true - there often are reasons why people do things - what do you think might be the reason that people do LS swaps?Theres a reason people do LS swaps..

You'd need something. With that much custom fab work I think the answer is obvious... custommjrstar wrote:surely if you are remounting the diff and gearbox the best place for the ppf would be in the bin!!SLYDIT wrote:looks great!
make sure you hook up the power plant frame form the diff to the gearbox back up. its an integral part of the drivetrain.

I did consider a few engines before choosing this one. The LS, UZ, even god forbid, a rover!! and to be honest if I someone wanted one built I would steer them towards the LS or UZ. The chev is 100 mm narrower across the rocker covers which would have made things much easier.
The attraction towards the little toyota was because it looks cool, its got a carb and dizzy, ( old school I know) and as far as I know, no one has put one in a mx5 before. I do like to be different.
Being such an oddball engine does mean parts are not easy to find, the crank had to be reground to suit the mix of bmw and holden sunbird bearings which were the closest to original. Modified a chev balancer to make pulley choices easier. These were only put out as autos so made the pressure plate to suit the biggest clutch I could fit in.
Hope that helps and no, car does not match rocker covers, its just plain old green.

didn't realise people went on about LS swaps in MX5's. Pretty sure there is a lot more 1UZ conversion's running around in NZ than LS conversion's (3 that I am aware off including mine).
I too looked at the Rover (light, cheap, but wast of time horsepower wise), 1UZ, and LS conversion, and went with the LS for one reason alone, POOOOWWWWEEEERRR. As Chris said, insane amount of HP out of them before even going to forced induction, but not cheap. 1UZ conversion is about a 1/4 of the cost of the LS conversion. And GM parts aren't all the cheap, better getting them from the US, but still not cheap after all the other add on's.
