My Hard Top is stranded in Alexandra argh!!
Any ideas team... am thinking maybe see if I can buy Dad a trailer... I bought the hard top from Alexandra thinking it would fit in his Passat or on his Passat but apparently its not going to due to its awkward shape.
I know, I just know, I know, if I get a cartage firm to deliver it to me it will be ruined, apparently it's in minty condition, tinted, fittings, demister, lining etc... every time I have gotten something like this moved its been a waste of time aand I have not wanted the item afterward!
He's down there doing Wanaka Ironman so a I have a few days, maybe buy him a trailer, what do you guys think?

Buy him a trailer????....cheaper to buy another hardtop, what with fuel & ferry costs . Then it will get bounced all the way home & ruined too!
Pay for a big roll of bubble wrap & go to town on it & then box it & ship it full of polystyrene.

I am thinking about this... I could get Dad to wrap it up in a roll of bubble wrap and take it to a cartage firm.. he CAN wrap things and he will understand what bits are at risk, and what can get busted... this isn't a poor idea at all...
Shit - not a bad plan either actually... I might jut do this after the Cannonball Run... just that I bought & paid for it in October last year, and want it leaned up in my room (with all the other crap I don't use Lol)!!

Once it's boxed surely it would sit happily on the roof racks of your dads passat?
Or just 2 fence pailings from mitre10 to span between roof racks, a bit of foam, then your hardtop on top and strap it all together!
Would create a bit of drag but what's a bit more gas consumption compared to getting it shipped!

I got my top up from Christchurch using Bascik Transport. They blanket wrapped it and it was fine. In laws recently used Star in Onehunga to ship stuff from Auckland to Cromwell with no problems. They have also used Mainfreight to transport stuff to Cromwell. As long as it is properly blanket wrapped it should be ok.

Hhmmm, I am VERY dubious as to whether it would arrive not smashed... I have it on good authority (and my own experience) that they're often damaged, the glass is VERY $$$$ and repairing them isn't easy... I bought this roof because it had everything and was mint I'd hate to mess it up.
Have given up on the trailer idea... real PITA this frankly

Bubble wrap,Especially over the glass,Couple of cheap carpet mats here and there, and the a big roll of commercial glad wrap to hold the whole lot together.
IF you could get it to CH CH to me at work,i can wrap and send from here,Done it for Ross(MX5 Mart) a couple of times now,$100.00 delivered Fully wrapped safe and sound,The trick is to get it to CH CH first,Could the seller drop it off to CH CH?

Thanks a lot Brownie, appreciate that,
Unfortunately, at this point, I do not think I can get it to Christchurch, the item was listed (see beneath) for Pick Up Only... which I had cleared w/the seller during the auction for January this year but now I can't achieve that so easily as I had thought - I don't think the seller is capable/interested/able to assist here.

Just a thought but not many cars could take a MX hardtop inside it, so it's gotta go on a trailer or on top?
If your old mans car has roof racks it should be fine to come back on it, with a little kiwi creativity.
-however if he ain't cool with it then that's end of story! but I don't see it being much of a problem...-I know I could carry a hardtop upside down on top of my MX easy.

hardtop woes
Just a thought. El cheapo flight to Dunedin or Chch, rent an Estima (or borrow if friends down there), drive back to Chch with hardtop inside, give to Brownie to get sorted, then get cheapo flight back home. Maybe too much trouble, but worth a thought.

Agreed, Coxie said it didn't fit into his Diamante/Fairmont full sized wagon, so I think only the biggest cars can take the Miata HT inside... Dad's got some racing bikes and a '09 Passat, the racing bikes are worth more that the VW and he's had a crack at fitting everthing, and come up zero... he already damaged his paint he says... I guess without being there I can't comment but assume the shape of the Miata HT and the low profile racks aren't conducive to a good relationship...
He's no fool and has strapped all ridiculous assortments of crap to cars before, I trust his judgement.
