MX5 High HP Build Thread

Post by REDBEN » Sun Sep 09, 2012 1:54 pm

Hi all,

I have always been a Die hard Mazda Fan and now have decided to start a new project. Over the last year I have been picking up bits and bobs to make a top-spec BP 1800 Turbo.

The Cylinder head is finished complete with:

-272 Cam shafts
-Solid Lifters
-Kelford Valve springs and Retainers
-Corksport Cam gears
-Custom fuel rail
-Honda K20A Coil on plug conversion
-ARP Head Studs
-Custom Intake manifold using Toyota 4AGE Black top throttle bodies (Being made in Perth by ActionDan customs)
-Custom coolant re-route kit from mx5plus.com.au

Image

The Block (BPT) is still under construction with:

-Eagle Conrods
-Wiseco Forged pistons
-ACL Race series bearings all around
-Chromolly 4kg Flywheel
-Clutch industries RPM 4puk sprung centre
-Boundary Engineering Oil pump (Still to come)
-ATI crank dampener (Still to come)

As for Turbo wise I picked up a Turbonetics T3/4 60 Trim with V band exhaust Housing from Barry at MRP.

Image

All of this to go into this little blue NA6 I recently purchased which in time I will convert to a NA8.

Image

The NA6 Had a lot of rust around the boot and door sils among many other areas in the car so out came the rust down went the rust killer, primer and then topped it off with the original MX5 blue.

This is what I have done so far much more to come!

No problem, looks awesome by the way the engine is a masterpiece of engineering!

ITBs and Turbo? Should be putting out some good figures!

Yep thats the Idea, Chris Burrett the owner of AL4SPN (orange BFMR) in NZPC managed a great 296 wKW with the exhaust cam swap and ITBs so I hoping to demolish 300KW finger crossed :D

Yep sure is! Has had a bit for TLC already doesn't smell like a caucus anymore either! Was a great buy and was in walking distance from where I live so super chuffed with that! Its going in for some more panel and paint in the next month for a final tidy up but plan to keep it blue.

a quick fiddle with the drag time calculators reckons you'll need 320+ hp , which is not unheard of !  good luck :]

Somewhere on the web I have seen an 1800 NA drag car that had around 600hp. Not too sure what times it was doing though.
There is this one but that runs a rotary.

UPDATE: Found it.
It does 8 second quarters - at 24 pounds of boost!

Both very cool! The NB cooler again, I don't want to resort to a rotor, piston should be able to do it. Getting the power down will be the big question.

Yeah I saw these both earlier in the year. Going to try get the 10sec slip with all stock trim and the Mazda BPT with a few tweaks (Despite loving the RB26)

Haha Cheers I got in contact with Chris as soon as his car came out in NZPC He's been a huge help with my build especially with the K20A Coil on plug set up. He's a pretty helpful guy. People like that hard to come by these days. :D

I do have all the info on the conversion including the drawings on solid works which I can get laser cut cost me $35 for the plate to be cut out of 3mm Stainless, I can get the Coils from Repco not cheap but brand new and then you need the fitting bushes to be made up I made them on the lathe at work could make you a set if youd like? Then for plugs you just get them from Strong for Honda. PM if you need more details. :)
