No offence SLYDIT but I dont think you know how retail works.
In NZ we are missing 2 things, quantity and proximity. Prices always work off those(among other things), we simply are far away and dont order enough to help bring down shipping or manufacturing costs and it will cost more.
The same then happens at the dealer end. They need to run the business, pay overheads feed families and if less people buy in the country then it gets harder to run anything.
Sorry for the rant but I have seen to many business go under in NZ partly because of people with that attitude. If you want american etc prices either more there or start buying/populating the crap out of NZ

I was quoted $3000 to ship an MX5 from Japan to Lyttelton.
So I dare say Mazda NZ is getting a better deal than I was!

You'll probably have to tack on GST on top of thatbiff wrote:I was quoted $3000 to ship an MX5 from Japan to Lyttelton.

The cost for a dealer to import a car is significantly lower than it would cost the average person (as they get a bulk discount). My stevedoring company I work for does not do the car unloads, but some of my friends who work for C3 sometimes head down to Auckland to help unload a vessel or two full of cars when they come in. I am curious to know the rough figures of how many cars they fit in each vessel but the closest estimate a mate gave me was "f##king s##tloads".biff wrote:My point is that even compared to the exact same model in aussie and exchangecrate nz is still 10-15% overpriced. you cant tell me it costs $5000 more to ship from japan to auckland than japan to sydney.
Amusingly, if you pay to get a car shipped, often they come via shipping container but sometimes the schedule will align and you would have your vehicle shipped in the same vessel as a car shipment..... but you would still be paying significantly more for the transport.
