new stereo

Post by Stuart Viner » Mon Jan 19, 2004 3:44 pm

I recently replaced the old stereo in my 1992 Roadster. The new stereo is
slightly smaller than the old one therefore the small "storage unit" below the
stereo no longer fills the gap.
Any advice on getting a slightly bigger unit.
Stuart

Same issue - what a drama. Ended up making a surround out od balsa and
painting with hobby paint. Looks good!

Stuart

I recall having this problem back in the States when I replaced my
original system with a new one in my '91 MX5 I owned then. I recall
being able to obtain a plastic pocket that fitted perfectly the gap that
was created. I also recall that there was at that time more than one
size of plastic pocket to accommodate replacement stereos that varied in
size. I would suggest you Goggle through some MX5 web sites out of the
States or contact Ross in Hamilton -- see Ross you are loved;) - if
anyone would know of more than one plastic pocket option he might.

Personally, I'd be interested in knowing as well given the only thing
that works on my manufacturers system is the radio and it needs to be
changed (after I get a new top and paint job now required due to the
SOB's that vandalized my car).

Hi Stuart,

I had the same issue and the people who installed my radio found a Nissan
pocket which fits perfectly, looks good. Try Automotive Security Systems 09
3777716 speak to Clive. He or his business partner will recall fitting my
radio, (Clive is an old flying mate), they will know what they used.

Regards

Eric

There is a pocket available from http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/products_new.php
a bit expensive though at roughly 30 pounds - $NZ90.
I understand that the pocket from a 323 mid 90s model will fit. Should be
available from Mazda parts locally.

The only problem with that one is that it fits the original stereo, not the
smaller new ones. Still, if anyone has just the pocket, I have the radio which
fits and I'll do a really sharp deal!

If I'm not mistaken... the radio hole is a 2-DIN gap,
and the pre-93(ish) radio is 1.5 DIN, the cubby hole
is 0.5 DIN. So, if you've just installed a regular
DIN size radio, you need another DIN size cubby hole -
and these are dirt common at wreckers, car audio shops
etc.

Alternately, there are 2-DIN size radios (Japanese
market usually) around. I saw a rather nice one on my
travels - it had a retro rotary knob, twin analogue
power meters and a vaccum tube amp :-O No, I didn't
buy one...

Hope that helps!
Jeff
