Boot covers

Post by EricW » Sun Jan 18, 2004 10:09 am

Hi fellows and fellowesses

I am about to order a boot cover (the cover which goes over the hood when it
is folded).

I am buying an original Robbins cover from the USA, the OEM item I believe,
as Robbins make the hoods etc for Mazda.

The local agent is Reid and Twiname in Auckland and the price $NZD 210.00
Plus GST

This is coming down with their next order from Robbins in early March.

Does anyone else want one of these, we might see if they can do better. Even
if they can't, if they are ordering one, they may as well order more.

Let me know promptly and I will see what I can negotiate.

I will apparently need to know model (NA or NB), colour, and whether the
vehicle has the rear body stiffening brace behind the seats.

Eric,

Thanks for your note. I have just bought an MX5 and would like to obtain
one of these covers.

My MX is a Japanese import so I do not have a lot of documentation with it.
As far as I can determine it is an NB (1998). It is gold and the hood is
black. Can't be sure if it has the stiffening brace you mentioned, apart
from the usual piece across behind the seats, which has the mesh pocket and
the folding spoiler at top.

I will also be looking for a hard top if you happen to hear of one in gold.

Cheers,

Hi, I am also after a boot cover for my NB MX5 the same as Brian Halls
except that it Does have the stiffening brace behind the seats. I priced
one from Mazda in NZ and they are also $210 + GST list price (less any
discount to MX5 members). There are plenty in the country.
Are they any different to the Robbins model you are intending to purchase?

Hi Steve,
Thanks for that. My phone enquiries to a couple of dealers seemed to strike people who were either not willing or not able to understand what I was after, hence my search for an alternative source.

Where did you locate the one you mentioned? It will, in all probability, be a Robbins, as I understand they make them for Mazda.

If there is a good "off the shelf" availability then we should all go that way, there is not much point in doing it the hard way. But I have not had much luck finding one so far.

Regards

Eric

Boot Covers

a good place to search for boot covers is your local car yard. A lot of MX5
owners never use their covers, and sell them with the car... and a lot of
dealers have no idea what they're for... Of course, it's a Catch-22
situation - you buy a cover from a dealer, he sells the car, the new owner
finds out about the covers, goes to his local caryard... etc, etc. If
you're lucky, you'll find a dealer who's sold a MX5 without it's cover!
Expect to pay between $100 and $200 (cash) for one that probably has never
been out of its bag.

Greetings
Car dealers are pretty cunning individuals, that's why they are car dealers.
They know what there for all right. They sell the car to you, you come back
looking for a cover, no they don't have one but they will keep a look out
and take your phone number. Well what do you know, they found one and yes
its just the colour you want. Well seeing you purchased the car from them
they sell at the price they paid. $100 - $150, cash of course. Ask for a GST
receipt or tell them you work for the IRD and watch the smile change.

I'm suspecting I've been sold an MX5 from a local
caryard without a boot cover, but I'm not sure if
there's a secret hidey-hole behind my seats where a
cover might be lurking. Is there such a place? There
is a section of the carpet on the parcel tray which
looks like it might fold open, but I've never been
able to get it to... Or if I did have a cover, would
it just be kicking around in the trunk somewhere and
I'd know it was there because it kept getting in the
way?

On mine (NB), there is a gap on either side of the gas
tank, forward of the boot. I doubt you'd find anything
in there tho`. It'd be a good place for an amp or
something that you don't need to get at much.
