changing manual gearbox oil

Post by Peter F » Tue Jan 13, 2004 8:04 pm

Hi, Can anyone who has an mx5 manual tell me what is the correct type of oil
for a manual transmission and how much it takes? I've ordered a book via
amazon.com, but don't want to wait until then. It's a bit awkward putting in
the new oil too, I think.
My '91 has just reached 201,000km and has probably never had it changed.
Every 100,000km is the correct interval isn't it?

75W90 gear oil or Redline MTL.
2L (or 2 quarts) will leave a little over.

Recommended interval 30K miles say 50K km.

Instructions here -

I put in Redline MTL (75w-90) and it is great. Need 2 qt's at $25 each.
Lyndon at the shop really knows his stuff. Worth asking about suspension as
well.

"Kendall Racing Supplies on Auckland's sunny North
Shore has RedLine ... ~$30/qt last time I looked.

TurboTinker runs the Redline MTL (75w-90), but will
try the heavier Redline MT (80w-90) next time. Or
Amsoil."

Hi, Shells listing (www.shell.co.nz) for the 5 speed gearbox is XGO 75/90
and takes 2.0Lt. Remove the gear lever to fill the box with oil. Most of the
oil companies have listings for most cars. Worth a look.

You DO NOT remove the gear lever to change the oil... which manual have
you been reading?

If you dont own manual, most home-mechanic type jobs are well described,
with pictures, at www.miata.net/garage/

There is a fill plug on the passenger side of the gear box.(and a drain
plug underneath).

(The "turret" section of the gear box, where you remove the lever does need
lubrication, but it takes 90cc... no way you'll get 2 litres in there)

NO !!!
Filler plug is on side of gearbox next to exhaust pipe.
As well as refilling gearbox, you should remove gearlever and top up oil in
extension housing, same oil.
Again -
http://www.miata.net/garage/trans/everything.html
will show you how.

I stand corrected...if the extension housing has been removed you need
to fill it through the gear lever hole/position.

Thanks, have changed the oil. The link to miata.net was especially useful.
