for the first part ,its easy, you have noisy tappets most likely. change
the oil and filter,will go away, sorry never done panel work on my car.

Could be a loose altenator belt if it sounds like a cat screeching..

Mine has been whistling for some months, especially when cold. Sprinkle some
water on the belts and you should find it disappears. Mind you it is
difficult to be selective so as to find the particular culprit! Water tends
to spray about you know.

Keith,

You're not using the correct tool. You need to be able to direct the
water accurately onto one belt at a time. The proper tool is available
from specialised stores. They aren't expensive and you should be able to
find a shop locally that sells them. The technical name for it is a
"water pistol" and any good toy shop should have one. ;-)
