Top dead centre pick up ?

Post by Maryann Broderick » Tue Oct 21, 2003 1:42 pm

I am a recent member to the club, and I am amased at
the support group that you have.

My newly acquired 89' MX5 cuts out occasionally, when
coming to a halt and sometimes "misses" on take off. I
was told by the AA today that they think it might be
the "Top dead centre pick up", and referred me to
another place to have it checked.

Before I do so, can anyone give me any information on
what I am dealing with ?

Or any other suggestions ?

Regards

Top dead centre pick up ?

Post by Gary Morrison » Tue Oct 21, 2003 2:01 pm

Marayann,

Welcome to the "club".

Gee, if that was the AA's technical advice I don't know if my membership fees
are being well spent.

My guess is that it is the sparkplug leads, they are known to produce this
sort of problem when they are getting old.

Regards

Gary

God only knows, obviously a phrase invented by them. They may mean crank angle
sensor.

One wonders who or what the AA Guy was trying to "pick up"! Maryann would
probably be better off referring to the recent list discussion on this
topic.

Top dead centre pick up ?

I just bought and fitted a set of plug leads to my car. Cured the misfire
when hot when taking off from a standstill etc. This was a very intermittent
problem. I bought them from Mazline while in Christchurch on Friday. Cost me
$108.00 including GST. Took all of 5 minutes to change them and they fitted
perfectly.
The car is now smoother over the whole rev range, and the fuel economy has
greatly improved (by better than 10%). It was obviously worse than I
realised.
