Luggage Carrier

Post by EricW » Tue Sep 02, 2003 10:10 pm

Having cast around for a luggage carrier, and found that they are not
available any more, even Ross has not got any, I have found someone who may be
interested in making them in Stainless. This guy makes excellent quality
products on a production basis, he is not a "backyard" operator.

Would anyone else be interested, so we can get the price down. I have no idea
at this point what the price would be, but I guess that it would always be
cheaper for 10 than for 1.

I am just trying to get a price at this point, so obviously an expression of
interest implies no commitment

Thanks for that Gary, hopefully we can make them a little cheaper than that
one, but it is a nice fall-back

Yeah, me too, that would be terrible, just think, that loss of
downforce of - ohh - let me see - about the same force that my little
2 year old son can apply with his little finger.

(Mind you, if he gets hold of my little finger in his fist, I can assure
you that where he goes I go...)

Check out this one from Texas dealer Mazdaformance:

http://www.mazdaformance.com/Merchant2/
merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=blkrackmx5&Category_Code=250

for US$64.95 and there's another one in chrome on the same site for
only US$5 more.

Only 22lbs (10 kilo) capacity, but more elegant than many I've seen...
very tempting.
Anyone interested in combining with an order to save freight costs?
(Did this recently with some mud flaps and it worked out well.)

Of course the alternative function of the wingy thingy is "boot
handle" and I suppose the same name would apply to the new
protrusion.

But seriously, does anyone have any actual physics on the
downforce at non-racing speeds?

Hmmm, I should imagine it probably does very very little apart from
facilitate the boot opening function, and to inhibit bootlid cleaning/waxing
BUT it looks good =o) I think I'd have to move up to a 'park bench' style
to see any effect (and that would just be the incredulous glances of
pedestrians). Having said which, at least with an MX5 being rear wheel
drive there may be some miniscule benefit (why anyone in a FWD would fit one
is anyones guess...)

The good news is, I'm now officially a Kiwi (although I still have Pom
tendencies) so I no longer wish to do the union jack paint/sticker thing to
the jelly bean =O)

I think my luggage rack is one of the best around, but I don't know
where you can get them, so not much help I'm afraid. http://homepages.
