Toyo TS1 Tyre Cost............

Post by krice » Thu Aug 28, 2003 9:03 pm

Am in the market for 4 new tyres and read lots of good stuff about Toyo TS1's. When looking on Miata.net, in the US these can be purchased for US$59.00 mail order which is exactly NZ$100. Add some freight over there in the US and you are probably at NZ$115.00 per tyre + fitting and balancing. Now I've been checking around and the best price I can get for 15" Toyo TS1's in NZ is $240 fitted and balanced, i.e. about $100 more than the US! Are we being ripped off? Does anyone know a cheaper source preferebly in Auckland?
Many thanks for your responses.

The T1S's are definately worth getting, but I don't think you'll get
them much cheaper than $240 in NZ, at least not in 205/50/15. By shopping
around you may be able to get down to $220 for a 195/50/15. The T1S is
actually cheaper in 17" size than it is in 15". That's because all the
boy racers have 17" wheels, so they sell ten times more in that size. At
least that's what Mag and Turbo told me. -- Chic & Morven, us@lynchz.com

I enquired on the list a while back about importing US sourced tyres (given
the seemingly very reasonable cost) and the replies indicated that duty was
a major issue and the cost once imported and all costs payed would outweigh
any initial savings. Bummer. Ended up with some reasonably priced P-6000s,
which are not really performance orientated, but I'm such a sucker for the
brand...

Hi Phil

How do you find the P6000's? I had some fitted about 2500kms ago and I am
really not at all impressed. The original Japanese ones, though getting
decidedly bare, were much more surefootted on turn-in. Be interested to know
if you've found that the P6000's improve with wear. What pressure are you
running them at?

I recently went through the tyre exercise and bought Goodyear F1 GSD3 tyres in
195/50/15. They were around $200 each. I have only been able to put 300k on
them so far as I have had hand surgery and driving the MX5 is currently out...
but so far they seem pretty good. Compared to the Toyo T1 Plus that were on
there the car feels lighter on its feet, more sure footed, and they're quieter
to boot...

(sorry for slow reply)
Simon-

I have had the opposite experience. My mismatched Jap Falken / Grid combo
was slide city (fun but nearly a bit too slidey a couple of times). P's are
very hard to shift sideways at all. I don't drive particularly agressively
though. I can't remember what pressure I have them at, I did look the
subject up at the time...
