1989 MX5: The sound of running water???

Post by Delich, Martin » Wed Aug 27, 2003 2:13 pm

Has anyone experienced the sound of sloshing water in the car while driving.
The carpets are dry but further investigation has revealed the drivers side
"sill" is partially filled with water. The sloshing sound is made when the
water is moving forward to aft in the sill. Once the car is stationary
slight water seepage can be seen from the rear sill jacking point. There
doesn't appear to be any obvious accident damage on the sill itself or
forward or aft of it; everything looks pretty much stock and original.

Any ideas or experiences appreciated.

Cheers.
MD.

There are drain holes in the sills to allow the water to escape, but these get clogged up over time and need something like a small screwdriver rammed into them to clear them. There is a factory service bulletin on it that you can find on the miata.net site

Also check the drain pipes for the soft top as these can also become blocked causing water to back up and flow into the sills.

The bottom of the drain hose is just in front of the back wheels and has a rubber flange that acts as a valve. The top of the drain pipes are by the softop hinge behind the seats and need to be checked as well.
