1.8 in my 1990

Post by Mikkels » Mon Aug 25, 2003 6:33 pm

zorruno has set up a domain for my photos which I have just
uploaded (some). Take a look.

This weekend I spent most of the time stripping the front of
the engine to fit the termostat housing. I decided to buy
one from Mazda to avoid stripping the 1.6 and ruining an
otherwise saleable good engine.

I replaced the cam belt while in there. The front of the
engine was very good with just a little cam belt dust iside
the cover. No oil at all but the cam belt tensioner was
slightly noisy when spun. Forked out for a new one at $107
yikes.

Let me know what you think of the project after viewing the
photos. The engine will go in soon but will be held up as
son's 21st this weekend.

1.8 in my 1990

D Day is the 13th of September. The engine is all finished
now. Just waiting on a few parts. I torqued up the front
crank bolt this weekend and reinstalled the pulleys on the
front. Had the esisting 1.8 clutch looked at by a clutch
specialist and he reckons it is as close as you can get to
brand new so I'm going to go with the existing units that
came with the engine. The lining on the driven plate still
has decernable writing on the wear surface. I will replace
the release bearing though.

This weekend I will get the 1.6 to lift out stage and do the
rest the following weekend.

1.8 in my 1990

I had a big weekend this weekend getting all of the final jobs done and
the 1.6 ready to come out of the car. The engine bay is stripped out
and the engine is sitting on the mounts with all peripheral gear out of
the car. A few more bell housing bolts to loosen and out it comes.
That will be this weekend's task. I have set up the coils and the
throttle body on the 1.8. Installed the thermostat and housing and
connected up all of the minor water pipes to the oil cooler etc. I have
installed the 1.6 Crank Angle Sensor with a new seal on to the 1.8.
Once the 1.6 is out I will swap the remaining sensors (oil pressure and
temperature) and hoist the new engine in. The job should be complete by
weekends end.
