High km MX5s (was Re: Opions please.)

Post by zorruno » Thu Aug 21, 2003 8:22 pm

ive always been a sucker for low k's...
I always try and tell people NOT to worry about the odometer when buying an
MX5. It doesn't really mean that much. If is it an import, there is a high
likelihood or rollback anyway, and we know that there are Miatas in the US
on the same engine with 300k miles (grandfathers axe anyone?)

Look at the condition of the car instead - some people (especially
clubmembers) have high mileage ones, because they like driving them! They
also meticulously maintain them, which is far more important than the ones
that people drive 2kms to work every day, use cheap oil, don't bother to
unzip the roof, only have their bonnets opened every 10,000kms, never clean
the drain holes, sit them outside because the other car is newer and needs
the garage etc etc

And, there is the added bonus with the MX5 that is the engine loses
compression because of its age, you can easily pop a good second hand or
reconditioned one in for around $1k installed. $1k is probably less than
the premium you'd pay for a lower km one.

I've said this to a few people - if I bought my MX5 again, I'd have bought
an earlier one and saved the money for an upspec'd engine, custom paint job,
or something else. I would definately not trade my 94 in & love it, but I
found after belonging to the club for a while that the later models do come
at a largish price premium, for only a littlish gain. A lot of that gain
you can add yourself (well all of it really!).

my 2c and IMHO and all that
