You shouldn't have any problem getting a WOF as the rego plate is not a
safety item. However, the Police will delight in giving you a $200 fine
'...for not having a front registration plate.'
The issue is really that anything other than a correct registration plate
does not comply as being a legal plate.

Dear Sir,
I recently removed my front bumper mounted number plate on my BRG MX5 =
and replaced it with silver (chrome effect) transfers on the bumper. The =
effect is great but I am getting different reports as to whether I will =
get a WOF. I see a nummier of cars around Christchurch who have done =
this so presumably they have passed a WOF inspection. Any comments or =
experience re this?

If you're very lucky you may get a warrant. But its the cops that you have to watch out for. You are risking a $200 fine for not displaying a front number plate (technically, only the plate issued can be used- no copies). Some people will tell you that they have had stick-ons for years without any hassles, but its all just a matter of time before the long arm of the law catches up with them.

I failed my WOF once for not having a front plate. Hadn't happened
before and hasn't happened since. I think they just make up what they're
going to test sometimes. -- Chic & Morven, us@lynchz.com on 08/13/2003 On
